I'm looking to hook up a computer to my Sony LCD tv via a geforce 6200 for some movies, music and web browsing. the tv has one HDMI port but that is currently being used by the cable box. i do have a dvi->hdmi cable that i would like to eventualy use with an hdmi switchbox (cable box, DVD player, and computer) - but i have to find one at a decent price. The choice that I have now is either VGA or component video output. The vid card came with an "HDTV breakout box" that provices component, svideo and composite video outputs. Which will provide a better picture, the VGA or component video connection?

computer specs - nothing great but it'll work for now:
p4 2.8 ghz
2 gb ram
2x200 gb hdd's
geforce 6200 AGP (256 mb)
dvd burner
linksys wireless SRX

Component and VGA should be quite similar. I would tend towards the component myself.

Is this what you called me about on Saturday? (Sorry I missed your call, I was actually at work :-/). So what'd you go with? How does it look? Wasn't the 'Bowl disappointing?

I just hooked a pc up to my 42" plasma with a dvi cable. I tried VGA too and it wasn't any difference or not enough for me to tell. I have the pc set to a high resolution so everything "fits" better(don't remember what exactly) and movies look great but for web browsing I find the txt is a bit hard to read and kind of blurry. If I set it to 800x600 which is closer to the tv's native resolution the text is excellent and movies still look good but web pages are so big one post about fills the screen so I'm constantly scrolling.
The video card is just a 9600XT. No second moniter hooked up.

component and VGA should theoretically look the same. VGA has more bandwidth, but you probably don't need it.

they probably WON'T look the same, though. and they probably won't look nearly as good as a digital connection.

it's all in how good (or bad) the analog conversion is in your TV.

i tried with both and the VGA provides a clearer / crisper image plus the TV has an auto adjust for the vga input which fits the edges perfect. DVI to HDMI did provide the best image though.

Jay - the call wasnt about this. we're having a b-day party for my dad on March 2 (60th). i'll give you a call tomorrow with the details.
