question about laptop processors - what is better in the long run - Pentium 4m 2.0GHZ or a centrino 1.5GHZ... i know the centrino will provide better battery life overall but what about processor performance wise? Is this chart true?
(taken from http://www.upenn.edu/computing/provider/docs/centrinoprovider.html )

Pretty much. My sister has a 1.73GHz centrino based laptop, and it flys.

Honestly, I'd look at getting one of the new dual-core laptops. The Centrino based Core Duos are very nice, and the battery life is excellent.

Go with the Centrino line (Pentium M) or the new platform (Core Solo or Duo). The P4 or P4m suck. Trust me, I have a bunch of them lying around my office from heat damage.

I have a HP with the 1.73 Centrino and I like it. It's faster than I thought it would be. CPU-Z shows it runs at 1729.1 when working but drops to 798.1 the second it becomes idle. I presume that helps extend the battery life and cuts down on the heat. When it was new last October I got a little over 3 hours on the battery. Not sure about how long the battery will last now because it mainly sits on the kitchen table and stays plugged in except for the odd time I take it to the couch or plug it into the tv to watch and avi or something.

Heh, 3 hours? properly configured you can get upwards of 6.

I vote for the core duo processor as well.

The new rev comes out this summer as well and is even faster than the current ones. Just saw a preview the other day.

I wrote this last weekend. It toggles my cpu frequency..seems I only ever bother with dead-slow (browsing web) or super-fast (compiling something or playing Quetoo).

Jay, you should contribute that to the community at large. I know, that I for one would use that utility. (I intend to get a laptop and dual boot it, I just haven't decided on BSD or a linux flavour)

Well, most heavy desktop environments offer a cpufreq applet or something similar. I've been on a BlackBox kick for the past year, and wanted something that could be called from a keybinding or at the shell. It's such a trivial little piece of code, I'd feel silly announcing it anywhere. At least you'll know where to find it.
