so i think i got this virus b/c I cannot view anything from www.microsoft.com www.symantec.com I have norton anti virus and firewall stuff, but anyways . . . I'm using zone alarm now, and for the record, I like it a lot more than norton, it seems like it doesn't eat up the resources as much. so i had a question, is anybody familiar with zone alarm? I've had it on my machine for 2 days now . . and so far it has blocked 4283 intrusions (15 of which are "high-rate" does that number seem kind of high? its only been two days. on another note, i still haven't fixed the problem where my symantec or microsoft don't load. (i wanted to go to symantec forums to look up my problem, and for microsoft, i want dx9 and i can't get to the downloads page) things i've done so far . . . ran norton, (updated) ran mcafee stinger proggy's Tried out AVG (updated --- thx jdolan!) ran trendmicro housecall? (online scanner) and of course zone alarm (which is my favorite out of all of these bad boys) i have run spyware S&D in every case, they all find some different virus and get rid of it. i guess that's comforting (not!) how did norton let all of these get past it?!?!?! crazy I used to totally trust norton even if it was a resource hog. please, any suggestoins would be nice. i am mainly curious about the intrusions thing, should that number be so high? thx --------------------

I don't know about you Bitch, but I dont spend a lot of time "unfucking" my windows installation.I'm still on the initial install I did when I built this box a year ago. In fact, I seem to remember that I had an install on this HD prior to the build, and just did a repair install to rebuild the HAL. Honestly, I just don't see how people can break windows all the time. I've broken more linux platforms by following directions than I ever have a windows platform by fucking around. Get off the horse, it's too big for the likes of you [ 05-13-2006: Message edited by: AcidWarp ] [ 05-13-2006: Message edited by: AcidWarp ] -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

do a search in the windows dir for a hosts.* file -> edit it in notepad. you'll see something ablong the lines of:127.0.0.1 localhost this one is ok you probably have something like: 127.0.0.1 microsoft.com 127.0.0.1 symantec.com 127.0.0.1 etc... delete all those then it should be all set for browsing to those sites. -------------------- i like the x ↓

I would suggest downloading the trial of Webroot's Spysweeper and running that in safe mode, if you think you have spyware. I have yet to find a better utility for removing that shit. Trouble is, it's a 15 day trial, and you can't just reinstall it if you need it again. What bob suggested will work, but if there's something in the machine editing the hosts file, then it'll just change that stuff back if it (the bad app) is still there. Oh, and for the record, F-Secure = best Anti-Virus around. A little bigger memory footprint than Norton 2005 (so probably smaller than 2006, from what I've seen); super stable, and probably one of, if not the best scanning engines around. F-Secure also has one of the fastest update cycles, with a very comprehensive list. And I was tongue in cheek. My point is though (and no offense meant) that if the only solution you can offer for any software problem is "install linux" then you aren't offering any solution at all. For a less knowledgeable user than yourself, installing and learning linux is a daunting and rather unrealistic task. Solutions must be tailored to suit the user.Besides, better than linux, get them to wait for OSX for x86. It's a much more user friendly OS, and it's still a *nix. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.
