Short story - Sunday April 2nd, 2006. My soccer team is playing in a Semi-final that i can only see over here if (a) I get DirecTV, (b) I can find a bar that has the Setanta Sports Channel and is open at 7am and is showing the game live.

(a) - no fucking way. I've had DirecTV before and never again. I'm surrounded by trees now but when I had their service before and we lost the picture, their customer support would be like, "is it raining?". Fuckers. I paid them full price and they couldn't get me a picture when it was raining.
(b) unlikely. The closest bar to me with the correct channel is over 20 miles and previous inquiries of this nature have always resulted with a solid "No".

This leaves me with one last-ditch option. Buy my Dad an ATi All-in-Wonder card, teach him to hook it up to his satellite receiver, teach him to stream the video and then I connect to that and watch the game here at 7am. Has anybody done this before?

Miss you guys.

I think I have a solution. If he has, or can get, a TV tuner video card and can figure out how to connect up all the video / audio (shouldn't be a hassle), I'm gonna remotely connect to his PC and do it that way. I dunno how well that will work but I'm clutching at illegal straws here.

I wonder how well a webcam would look? Remember, I'm clutching straws.

Or a slingbox!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16882169001

You could even have him get an additional DirecTV receiver and you could watch and control it from your house.

It's just so funny when people bitch at the satellite companies for a fuzzy picture due to weather. It's a limitation of sat technology and no matter who your provider is you're going to have that problem. Hey - those dishes are like 22,000 miles away, you're lucky to be getting any picture at all

I've streamed live tv before using a WinTV card. The easiest streaming software I've found to use is TinCam and the demo for that is good for 30 days.
I don't think watching it on his pc via Remote Desktop will work very well. I have some webcams streaming from my house in BC and when I look at them on the computer out there via Remote Desktop the video is not smooth enough to want to watch for very long so I just go in to change cameras and then watch it back on my local machine.

streaming from a good webcam may work well enough too.

You're right Josh, why should I complain about paying good money for NO picture (note: not bad picture, NO picture). Quite silly of me really.

Thanks for the replies folks. I think I may try the web cam route as it's useful for other things too.

another route I am thinking about is having my Dad run a proxy server (Privoxy) on his machine (In the UK) and then I connect to an internet broadcast via his machine. The reason I would need to do that is that the broadcast is blocked to the US and Canada. Has anybody use Privoxy (or another free Proxy server) and can offer any pointers? It seems from what I have read that I just need to get him to install it but I haven't had the opportunity to test anything yet. I've not even asked him to install anything yet either.

That would be great! The soccer forum that I frequent is pretty uptitght and whenever anyone posts a thread about such things, or posts a link to internet feeds, the thread is removed and the poster banned. I have a good feeling that the game will be available somewhere, like EPSN China or something like that, it's just finding it.

Well, my team lost 0-4 and got two guys sent off so it's probably just as well that I couldn't see it. Listening was bad enough.

I know it's after the fact but I noticed this item in a flier last night for London Drugs. The Slingbox let's you watch a tv from any pc with a broadband connection. Only 249.00 Cdn here so that's not a bad deal. Maybe something to think about for the future.
