For my birthday this week my roommate bought me a nice bottle of Woodford Reserve. It's a pretty nice Kentucky Bourbon.
http://www.woodfordreserve.com/

A lot of you guys that post here are um.. "older" and have distinguished tastes Could you give me some recommendations for a good whiskey? I am up for trying anything, I personally like Bourbons and Tennesse Whiskeys but I want to try some new stuff. Any recommendations for me?

I keep hearing good things about Makers Mark and I want to eventually give it a spin.

Also, how do you guys prefer to drink your whiksey? Some like to use ice, splash it with water, or just drink it out of a glass.

As I was saying on IRC, in the summertime I like Dewars with ice and a splash of water. In the winter, I drink Knob Creek dry. I'll also drink Dewars dry in the cold months if I don't have any Bourbon. It's a little harsh if you're used to drinking it with some water, but I'm usually looking to maximize the warm sensation in January

I don't drink whisky. . . But if I had to, Old Bushmills 16yr Single Malt, neat. From what I remember it's pretty good. Side note: Old Bushmill's Distillery is the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Something like 400yrs.

For unmixed spirits, I'm more of a Sambuca person.

Other than that, it's rum and cokes all the way. Captain Morgan's Arrrrr!!

I love a good single malt Scotch served neat. I like to sip a ginger ale, especially Vernors brand with it.

Glenlivet 12 y/o is my standard these days. I highly recommend it as a not too expensive single malt. I like the 18 y/o stuff even more.
Glenfiddich 18 y/o is rather good and very mild.
Glenmorangie 18 y/o is one of my favorites.
Laphroaig 15 y/o is one of the best I've ever had.

Dewar’s White Label, Dewar's 12 (and maybe even their more expensive signature series) are known as 'blended' scotch and not a single malt. Dewars is not bad and one of the best blended types. Other blended scotch whiskey include: Johnnie Walker & Chivas.

Hey, happy birthday Xan!

I've only ever had bourbon once and it was Wild Turkey. I have no idea if it would be considered very good but I must have enjoyed it because I can't remember much from that evening.

My whisky of choice would be single malt Scotch neat. A Scotch like Laphroaig that Cac suggested is from Islay and has a very strong peat flavour, so I'd say it's a bit of an aquired taste. My favourite Islay Scotch is Lagavulin but Bowmore 12 is also very good, cheaper and probably easier to find.
One single malt that you shouldn't miss is Oban 14 from the West Highlands; very smooth with a hint of peat.

I also drink Crown Royal rye; very easy to drink, just on rocks.

omg whiskey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my all time favorite
happy birthday homie!!!!!!!!!!

being a college kidd, i'm poor as hell

makers mark is what i get if i know some honey's are gonna be there. its 25 bucks a 5th. jack D is over rated at 20 bucks.

having whiskey be my favorite, its pretty easy for me to drink ---> evan williams 10.95!!!!! but trust me, put that puppy in the freezer before drinking. it makes a world of a difference.

makers mark really does own, drink it straight on ice. i've nver heard of mixing with water until now. i'm not exactly a "distinguised gentleman" either.

okay, as for wild turkey. 101 wild turkey is soo ultimate ownage! its 22 bucks i think? but still, its 101 proof, so its strong. put that puppy in the freezer! really helps.

I personally like taking shots and chasing it w/ some coke (or water if you don't have any) when i mix my coke and whiskey, i drink too much coke and it gives me heart burn hahahaha.

i'm not sure if yukon jack is considered a bourbon or liquor, not my style at all, but if you wanna try something sweet, yukon jack is sweet (as in sugary).

cool think about evan williams is, not many people are gonna want much, so more for you!
makers mark, well, it'll disappear fast.
if you want something in between, try jim beam. (put it in the freezer)
i've had some nicer things than makers, but i forgot their names. I'll check it out. but yea, for teh cheaper stuff, throw it in the freezer. makes shot smoooooth. have fun !!!!! and drink water before hittin the sack! have a bottle of gatorade for the mornin! mahahahahahaaha

Oh yeah how rude of me, happy belated birthday Xan!!!

Crash - I see that you know your Scotch. I almost mentioned the three types of Scotch malt whiskey:

Highland Malt - Usually the best
West Highland Malt (Islay Malt) - Known for the smokey flavor
Lowland Malt - Usually used in blended scotch

whiskey = water of life

I hate Scotch. Go figure. I've tried many varieties but it just never seems to sit well with me. I don't mean it makes me feel ill, I don't drink enough to get that way, it just doesn't taste good to me. I figure since it shouldn't be a chore to force down liquor, perhaps it's just not for me.

According to an article my wife read here are some whisky drinking tips:
1. don't drink it neat. it's a concentrate and as such is supposed to be watered down.
2. the best way to water it down is not to add water per se but pour it over some ice and let it melt for a while so that the ice cold water mixes with the whisky.

Now that could a load of old bollocks, I don't know. Every which way I drink it it's always the same. Eurgh! That said a friend let me drink some special Southern Comfort. He said it was really old. It came in a bottle with the usual lable but it was coloured in. I think he said it was 50 years old. He only had a couple of shots left so we finished it and it wasn't too bad.

EDIT: if you go to the bottom of this page: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/miniature/smallworld/BourbonS2.htm

the label (not the bottle though) looks like Southern Comfort #1.

Happy Birthday Xan.

A Scotsman that doesn't like Scotch. I think that makes you a heretic Max.

Max - Your wife is right. The correct way is to add water/ice but I still prefer it neat and with a chaser.

oh, and if I'm doing whiskey in a civilized manner, it's usually jamesson's or tullamoor dew on the rocks. I've found myself preferring tequilla lately, however. That was largely influenced by the stock of Pure Sangre that Beverages 'n' More had for $15-20 a bottle depending on the variant. It's normally in the Patron price range, and easily as smooth. I think they might still have some reposado on their website. I cleaned out nearly the whole supply of anejo for the county.
