well, I'm sure that I do not have all the answers as to how to do it the best but when I command, then I command. I do nothing else. This means I find me a hiding spot somewhere and stay there the entire round. Now this is not exactly playing as you are used to playing but if you have the right mentality then it can be satisfying.
I (always check when I start [while selecting my squad for example] whether or not we even have a commander. In any good servers we usually do, but if we don't then I apply for the position.
It will tell you that you have applied for cammand duty. Sometimes if a higher ranked player also applies well then he will get the job as he should I suppose.
But provided you are accepted (you then hit page up to accept the position), I then try to find a spot to lay low.
Then you hit the Caps Lock key and it will bring up your command screen.
On this screen you have a couple of abilities and can see where your guys are and also the enemy (although to do this you need to use the UAV (localized rader essentally) which only lasts until your predator runs out of fuel or use your scan button which is a screen wide rader sweep. As it passes over the screen you see everything but as soon as it passes you then lose site of the enemy blips.
Also your men can tell you when they see things which will then make them (for a short time) also show up on your command screen.
The Scan button (screen wide radar sweep) is tied to your Sat trailer
the UAV button is tied to the UAV trailer
you also then have the Supplies button and the (fun one) Artillery button.
On the right screen you can click on a position (essentally centering it in your view) then roll your mouse wheel and zoom down enough to actually see little guys running about fighting. In this view you can see without the scan/UAV and if they aren't marked then they are enemy soldiers. You can then also click (right click on the scrren pulls up options) and select "spotted" which sends a message to everybody telling them an enemy car/armor/sniper/etc. has been spotted and he/it will show up on thier screens for a minute.
In the left portion of your screen you can see your squads. Here you can see how many guys are in each squad and what thier kit is so that you know where your snipers/engineers/etc. are at any given time.
You can select individual or even multiple squads at once and then right click on the big screen and give them orders.
You can tell them to attack given coordinates, defend a coordinate, Mine a location, repair something etc here.
Also when you have a squad selected, you can talk via VOIP to the Squad Leader and they can also talk to you in game. They can do this at any time.
So basically when I command, I hide somewhere then pull up my screen and take a look, (I'll ussally stay in this screen the entire game).
I begin selecting squads and coordinating the attack in order to attempt to overtake all of the spawn points as possible because if you can (permanent non-cappable spawn points notwithstanding, some maps have them, some do not), and then your guys can track down the stragglers well the game is over when they all die.
So you have guys jumping around from flag to flag and your using the arty button to bomb the shit out of them as best you can. Now BUrbles right, if you have a team of dummies then it's frustrating, but if they listen, more often than not you will win.
If they have a compentent commander too, then it does get harder because he's doing the same thing.
You can get good points like this because you get 2X if you when but even if you lose you end up with 30+ points usually.
they will ask for supplies etc. and when they do they show up yellow on the screen. Try to satisfy those requests the best you can, it helps a lot.
Here I just googled and found this, it should help (I'll have to read it too) but It takes a little practice to do well and you do need some decent squad leaders.

forgive the mispellings cause I was in a hurry as I need to go pick up my guys from school but I can go more in depth later.
You can also (This is fun with my boys) select a Single player game against the bots and then other people can select multiplayer but instead of picking a server, have them put in the IP address of the singleplayer host.
They will join your game and you will have coop play against bots. Even on expert they aren't as challenging as online play but it's good practice/training whatever you wanna call it
