The fan doesn't sound right, and this just started recently. This whole summer I've been battling lockups and I don't know what's causing them except possibly a heating issue. But now the PSU might be on its last legs, which doesn't surprise me cuz the thing is over 4 years old and always on, and I'm wondering if it isn't causing these lockups. I don't want it taking any other parts with it when it dies.Would any of you guys recommend that I open up the PSU and fix or replace the fan myself, or should I just go get a new one? The last thing I want to do is open up a power supply, but I also don't like the idea of dropping $100 into a new one either. And yes, a new PSU is going to run me $100 because of the goddamn BTX connector and 460W minimum power requirement. what dAm said.I would also consider putting a tester PSU in just to see if the lockups go away. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

Fucking hell. I just spent the afternoon fucking with the thing. I thought I found a compatible PSU at CompUSA, nope. Got a Tyan Thunder K7 and the sons of bitches use a proprietary aux power connector to the motherboard. Its 8-pin and not 4-pin. So now I gotta take it back tomorrow. While I had the old PSU out, I popped the case apart and found that there's no way I'm getting it out without bending or breaking the chassis. After air cleaning it with my lungs and almost passing out cuz I don't have any air cans, I just put it back in and the fan still sounds like its grinding. I couldn't find anything obstructing or rubbing against the fans when I had it open. I don't want to order a PSU for this, cuz they're probably not manufactured anymore and if I do find a model that is, I'll prolly pay an arm and a leg for it. I hate this machine. Proprietary PSU, Registered DDR memory on a 266 bus, AGP Pro. Pro. Whatever the fuck that is. Last time I buy a server motherboard. This is the best PC in the house too. What dAm said, but changing the PSU fan won't do you any good, it's a lost cause. Just get a new one, and/or a new PC while you're at it.Me, I gotta shop for a couple of cheap PCs for our new programmers... prolly gonna go with some Semprons with integrated graphics... -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one
