Went to a beach office party on Wednesday. Kayak races, sailing, drinking, drinking and more drinking, paragliding more drinking and home by 6:00 PM, in bed by 7:00 PM woke up at 2:00 AM still up.... can't sleep. Visited Asta for some crack, cought a nasty virus spent the next hour getting rid of it, it corrupted my music drive, 10,000 mp3's gone. Think I have them backed up some place.. hope so. Took four years to collect them all. No more Asta for 2X. I'm almost to the point where I'm so sick of viruses I might start paying for software. I run Norton, Sbybot, Ad-aware, ewido and Microsoft Anti-spyware and even with that combo some viruses still get through. It was so bad I quit surfing porn sites altogether. Seems like most of them are infected. Is it just me or has the web gotten a lot more viral in the last year or so?

2x, it probably would have been possible to recover your music drive, unless it's a seperate drive that actually failed (as in HD failure)

How so? Drive did not die just lost half of it's data? Wish it had been a raid set up. Would have been easier.

You might have been able to recover something using Easy Recovery Pro by Ontrack, or another data recovery program. Easy Recovery works really well. I once used it to recover the complete contents of a wrecked partition in about 20min. Even when it can't recovery everything, it can at least recover something.

Maybe its cuz 4 of those 5 programs are for spyware and not viruses. And if you're not paying for Norton, how are you updating the software? If you're not updating, then I don't know what you're expecting it to do.

Avast is very good. For a free AV proggie. Probably the best of the free ones. I like it for it's tiny footprint, great for older machines.

The best for detection still seems to be Norton, maybe F-Secure (I haven't seen any comparisons with F-Secure though), Norton is flatout better than the rest for sure. That's the Maximum PC verdict, not mine. I'll trust their judgement. They seem to like bashing bad products, and have a nack for finding the bad ones too.

I would NEVER trust a PC mag's judgement. Magazines make money from sponsorship and ads so I'm sure most of the time the best product also happens to be the best paying sponsor.

If you do decide to get a data recovery tool, that could be the perfect time to start paying for software. I looked for a freebie but didn't have any luck. All the trials (that I found) were very limited.

Buying software isn't as bad as you think, it's actually quite liberating. It wouldn't be a bad thing to contribute to software development by paying for is once in a while.

Miss you guys.

Josh, I think Maximum PC is better than many other mags. For no other reason than they have trashed on products that have appeared in ads in their mag.

I remember a power supply article they did. They gave a 3/10 to the Ultra X-Connect Power Supply, which is STILL featured in a full page ad on the back cover.

Flux I paid for my Norton Internet Security but you can use a keygen for non-Internet (telephone type) activation.

Is this some new olympic sport or something?
