I've always thought it was gib opposed to jib. Now I probably won't sleep until this issue is resolved.

Gib with a hard G, the only way to go. Jib is stupid, even though it's apparently the 'correct' way.

Hard G and you know it.

Resolution:

Gib is an abbreviation of giblets, as in the body being blown into giblets. So here is the dictionary.com definition of giblets with a clear and unmistakable pronounciation showing that the g is soft.

I was about ready to debate this until I was blue in the keyboard but I concede. I guess I can sleep now. I found another explanation of it here which actually makes note of Quake turning it into a verb.

But, even though I conceded, I still think it should be pronounced Gib and I'll probably keep pronouncing it that way.

In general, C's and G's are soft when followed by E, I, or Y and hard when followed by A, O, U. Of course, it's not universally true. I mean, think of the absurdity of saying that an I following a G gives it a soft pronounciation.

I personally like "gi-bib" (yeah, I'm bad at phonetics) but to my dissapointing surprise, its more like "jib" (think of .gif. For years I thought it was "gi-fif" but its said exactly like the peanut butter JIF)

Choosy perverts choose .GIF

OMG dAm. . . [em]Giblets got to you too!! Nooooooooo!!!!!!!

Heh. I'm of the jib school. Although, I've seen evidence that both are correct. It depends on english dialect I think.

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

One entry found for giblets.
Main Entry: gib·lets
Pronunciation: 'jib-l&ts also 'gib-
Function: noun plural
Etymology: Middle English gibelet entrails, garbage, from Middle French, stew of wildfowl
: the edible viscera of a fowl

See, the pronounciation key gives it as both a hard and soft G sound.

GFK, I also say gif instead of jif, but I say jiblets instead of giblets. I've also been known to say A-sus instead of the proper a-sUs (short a, long u sound, serious, I've heard their corporate marketing BS)

quote:
From the article GFK linked: From : nick
Subject : The pronunciation of 'gib'

To kill this issue once and for all, I had to dig back, way back, into the deep, dark recesses of quake news archives...

Here it is, from the man who probably invented the damn word:

"...and most importantly: It's 'jib', not 'ghib'. "

You can check here to check for yourself. It's an interview from the CPL tourney last July, and John obviously thought the matter was so important he just had to clear it up.

I want to punch people that say GIF like give. Its JIF like the peanut butter.

Tho, I thought it was LIE-NUX for the longest time, but I had to go with the majority because there's a clear majority on the pronounciation of that word. Good thing I straightened that out before college, or the department might've kicked me out.

Now vi will always be vie. Not this VEE-EYE bullshit. If its a goddamn acronym, then capitalize it you tree-hugging open-source dipshits. [/PSA]

I have a friend that says nVidia like en-vidda, not en-vidia like it should be. That also inspires me to punch things, like his gianormous gnome stomach. I can't break him of it either.

How about char, short for character? Programmers know what I'm talking about. I prefer 'car', not 'care' or the literal 'char' cuz those just sound weird, even tho its full name is pronounced care-acter.

This has to be the best thread ever.

One thing I remember that made me figure out "the way" to properlly say the world is from the old QuakeCast days. They always said "jibbed." Made me feel like a dick. lol

I think I say day-ta-base more often, but I'll use both interchangeably.

It is ih-terate tho, not eye-terate.

Unfortunatly, I've never had the need to use the word gib in real life besides when I type it on message boards or in quake servers, so I don't know how I would pronounce it.
