Trying to find a job, throwing a decent resume up there seems to be helping me out. After the initial influx of "BE A CAR SALESMAN - NO EXP REQUIRED" spam emails let up (and they have slowed considerably and don't clutter the real prospects), there have been a few decent leads to come through. I thought it wouldn't lead anywhere, but apparently people other than car salesman use it to look for potential employees.Anyone who is a programmer in a big metropolitan area, do contract work. It may not be very consisten employment, and you don't get benefits, but at $45/hr, you can go 3 months of the year without working and still pull $60K annually. I'm entry-level and my recruiter is pimping me around at $45/hr. Who knows what a pro contractor can pull down. Cleveland has shit for skilled jobs though. I'm glad I'm doing contract work until grad school starts, because now that I've seen how hard it is to actually get a goddamn job in this city, I can't fucking wait to leave. --------------------

Amen dev. . . It should be noted that ANY kind of contract work sucks in the long term.Although, it does make it easier to just walk away when you need to. Heh, I have a friend that's been doing contract programmer work since the 80s, he's of the opinion that it's basically gotten to the point that no one really needs a skilled programmer anymore. Every sysadmin and his lv50 Elf with access to the internet can pull down tutorials and do what needs to be done. Without even the 20sided die, and even those are virtualized now. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

There aren't tutorials on how to manage a team, at least you can't do it well just by reading them. No tutorials on architecture or design when it comes to a lot of very specific applications or needs, and I'm sure if anyone saw a software architect googling that shit, they'd be fired. And I sure as hell wouldn't want to hire any of the numerous dipshits I graduated with to demonstrate how to sit on a toilet seat, let alone write even the simplest of code. But if you need some bitchwork done, a bitch to do the work can be easily found. Just make sure its bitchwork. There will always be a need for skilled and unskilled people in any profession. P.S. sysadmin != programmer --------------------

I know that sysadmin != programmer, hence the elf comment.I was just stating the gist of his opinion. I didn't say it was mine. I'm more inline with your view. Hell, I'm so much in agreement with you, I'm going going back to school to do computer science. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

lol AW =Dcontracting's cool, but not for a lifetime. Or if you want it for a lifetime, build a team for it instead of going solo. -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one
