I got a buddy who wants to get his own domain name and host it himself. Problem is, I don't know how to forward a domain name directly to an IP address without having him set up his own nameserver. Anybody got any ideas or advice? I've never tried to do this cuz I've had free web hosting for the past 3 years that lets me forward domains and subdomains as needed.

If you want a domain to point to a particular full static or a 'sticky' IP, you will either have to run your own DNS servers or pay to have another host manage DNS for you. Keep in mind that broadband 'sticky' addresses are subject to change, so you may have to periodically update your DNS provider with the new info.

I'd like an answer to this one too. I bought some domain names and would like to host them from home over a broadband connection.

I followed your link and most of them are either rated terribly or are too expensive. You can get web hosting for $3.00 a month so why would you pay more than that for DNS services to host your own site from home? Most of them were in the $30-$50 range per year or the free ones which were ranked really really bad...

at least Apache provides a service called ProxyPass (or something like that) which enabled a domain to be pointed to one server, and Apache running on that server reads the WWW content from another computer/IP.
Just in case the domain name is fixed to a certain server, but you still want the content to be hosted elsewhere. Of course this will place strain on both servers instead of just one.
