I've just built a new web server box at home for learning Apache/php/Mysql

I've got comcast cable and a linksys router.

To see this server from the outside world what do I have to type in the address bar?

I'm guessing I put the server in the DMZ.

I'm not static so my ip will change every now and then but today it's 68.33.158.181

the box with the apache server is 192.168.1.201

So what would you type into the search bar?

Anyone see anything there?

duh,

I think I just answered my own question.

Click here and you should see an ass http://68.33.158.181/

Click here and you should see that php is installed and running http://68.33.158.181/php.php

And click here and you will see "Hello World" http://68.33.158.181/first.php

now go to www.dyndns.org and set up an account there.
quote:
The Dynamic DNS service allows you to alias a dynamic IP address to a static hostname in any of the many domains we offer, allowing your computer to be more easily accessed from various locations on the Internet. We provide this service, for up to five (5) hostnames, free to the Internet community.

download a client and you're ready to go. no more typing in the ip and the clients automatically update when the ip changes

I tried to config php to run with apache but had 0 luck. Instead I found a pre-packaged version called apachetriad2

with mysql,php5,apache2 and an ftp server all thrown in together.

My new server screams with it's Celeron 300a chip 256mb of the best sdram money can buy and a whopping 14 GB of hard drive storage space. The OS is on a 6 gig western digital drive and the page file and programs are on the 8 gig Western digital drive. She is a speed demon!!!

Anyways she's fast enough to learn on and run the tiny databases that I have in mind for her.

Is apache somehow different. I've got my html file and image in the same folder.
I can see it locally but it's not out there on the web??? BTW, if you can see it sorry for the porn. I'll change it now for anyone in a no porn environment.

if you ended up using DMZ you might want to forward port 80 to 192.168.1.201 instead - it's alot more secure that way.

Mine was actually a point regarding performance. Such modest hardware would fare better running something slimmer than 2000/XP. Don't be mad. Ignorance is supposed to be bliss

Who's being a dick? I hope it's not me I don't mean to be a dick.

I realize Linux is the shit for people who know computers inside and out.

For the rest of us it'a mystery.

I grew up skiing. I started when I was three. I don't even remember the learning process. I'm a kick ass skiier. A few years ago I tried to learn to snowboard. It was really difficult for me. I can make it down the hill but it's not pretty.

I learned basic windows 7 years ago. It was difficult but interesting. Compared to many of you I am a newbie moron. Compared to the average home user I am a god.
So here I am feeling like god, with all my computer powers and then someone say's Hey you, come and learn Linux. It's hack proof and stable and it's less bloated. Only problem is you are going to have to start back at step one. As interested as I am, I don't want to take another 5 years of learning to get to the point that I m already at with Bills OS.

Win 95, 98 and 2000 were unstable. I run XP for months at a time without a crash. True XP is bloated, So I turn off half the services it ships with. Linux is free, So is XP if you get it off of Limewire. XP is not secure, but with a cablemodem/firewall and some software you are somewhat safe. In 7 years I have never had a virus that did any real damage. I'm not saying I don't get viruses, but I can usually catch them before they do anything or find a fix for the ones that get through. My basic point is overall I'm pretty happy with XP. It does what I ask of it.

So anyway if the dick message was directed at me I'm sorry for being a dick. I like the ideas behind linux I just don't have 10 hours a day to learn it like I did with windows products 7 years ago.

And yes I've installed Linux on 20 different machines and just usually get frustrated trying to do simple things... It's not the fault of Linux, it's my impatience with learning new things.

I haven't been a dick at all. You started with the personal attack, having nothing relevant to contribute to this thread. Why are you ragging at me? You should have just moved on.

Anyway, I don't even care. You're being silly. I'm sorry, Flux, if I offended you somehow. Okay?

eh, just don't let it happen again.

doublefresh (i can never remember if everyone abbreviates your name as 2X, or if that's someone else) - why are you importing Access databases? Just curious. I've never worked with Access myself, but MySQL isn't too bad. I like MS SQL Server myself, but there's no way in fuck any sane person would buy it for their own simple HTTP server.

I've set up Apache and MySQL before on XP, but getting MySQL set up was a bitch.

yes yes, double your pleasue double your fun 2X is I, 2X is I.

Access has wizards for lazy people. They actually work quite well.

MySql has a database import tool that will convert my access databases into MySql databases.

It worked very well :-)

Now I just have to write some php to query my database and I'll be in business :-)
