I highly recommend www.limewire.com http://astalavista.box.sk/
with these two sites you can download just about anything and find a way not to pay for them.

If you prefer freeware and Demos you cant beat www.cnet.com and www.tucows.com

for free spywear removal I use spybot

I started laughing when I read D2's topic and then 2x's post...I was thinking "here the guy has an aparant spyware issue and he is being sent to asta?" But intentions are all good I know

first things first D2, go to:
www.lavasoft.de and get AdAware

then go to:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and get Spybot: Search & Destroy.

Those two programs should keep you rather well guarded against spyware (and remove any current spyware you might have).

I run Spybot in conjunction with Asta they = each other out :-)

Adware or not Asta has been giving up the goods for me for over 6 years.

Microsoft's new spyware cleaner. Its not bad, it found a few things after I scanned with AdAware.

There's this sweet little app called netbus. It runs like a dream. It's pretty small. I'll email ya a copy.

The one MS just made available Acid linked to is the old Giant one and works pretty good. I also highly recommend regprotect. Just google for that one. It works like a dream and you never even know it's there until you need it. I thank AW for turning me on to that one.

Regprotect? I turned you on to that one? christ, I must be getting old, i don't remember that.

At anyrate. Hands down the BEST spyware remover, is SpySweeper by Webroot. It's scary how much it finds after running Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder, About:Buster, Hijack This etc. The best part about SpySweeper is that it also runs a realtime protection, to help block stuff on the fly.

The only downside to spysweeper is that it isn't free, and that it's one of the slower scanners. I tell you though, NOTHING is more thorough. It is fairly inexpensive though, and I would HIGHLY recommend it. There is a 30 day trial available if you want to check it out.

If the name Webroot sounds familiar, they also produced MailWasher.

Since you are so observant, maybe you can point to me where anyone in this thread made that mistake...DJ made a reference to the M$ scanner that Acid posted a link to and then thanked AW for something else.

Anyway, my take on it is: why would I trust M$ to protect me now when they have failed to do it for how many years now?!?! I "tried" their scanner and found othing special about it.

Well, for one thing Snaggles, it's not actually made by Microsoft, and the only reason it's still beta is that I don't think they've finished erasing all the references to Giant Software from the code yet. It does actually have some interesting features. It'll be interesting to see how well it functions.

Oh, and it was my pleasure 2x

Works pretty well. I have it set to auto scan each night.

Yahoo Anti-spy and AdAware still pick up items after the fact though. But run them in reverse order each misses ones others get.

However, I just picked up something that none of my virus scanners is finding. I get pop up windows every few minutes even when I'm at 100% safe sites. Any suggestions? The pop ups are pretty random. Casinos, Virus scan advertisements, surprisingly no porn.

Could be CoolWebSearch, but that's notorious for the porn pop-ups and hijacking start pages.

I'd run CWShredder and About:Buster in any case. Both remove CWS variants. Then I'd do SpySweeper again. All of this should be done in safe mode. In fact ANY spyware removal should be done in safe mode. Not Safe Mode with Networking, just straight Safe Mode.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html <--About:Buster download.
