I'm relying on you smart network guys to come through for me here cuz I don't think I will be able to cope with working on my laptop for evermore .

Last night I tried to install the Google desktop but it complained about conflicting software. I had V-One's smartpass installed for when I was working at IBM a few months ago. I don't need it any more so I removed it. I rebooted my PC and now I can't access my cable modem. I called Comcast and the tech said that he could communicate with the modem so the problem must be between my PC and the modem. I uninstalled my netword card rebooted and let Windows add it again. The error message I get is:
"Limited or no connectivity
You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources...."

Now the fact that I am posting here using the same network connection as my PC is using (via my Linksys router) proves that the router is OK and so is the modem so the guy was right, there must be a problem with my PC. I have not installed any new windows updates and I've not updated any drivers, etc. This all happened after I removed v-one smartpass. I actually uninstalled a bunch of software last night but nothing else that is network related.

Does anybody know what I can do to repair my network connection on my PC? I know it's a long shot but I don't even know where to start. If anyone has any troubleshooting tips that I can try I'm all ears.

Here's what I am running on my PC:
Windows XP Home Edition SP2

Cheers, Max

PS - HELP!!!!!

EDIT - resetting the router and modem didn't work and neither did bypassing the router. typing ipconfig /renew gave me this message:
"Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2: An operation was attempted on something that was not a socket"
When I connect to my router from my laptop and look at the DHCP table I only see my laptop. I can't even connect to my router from my desktop.

is the NIC integrated or PC-Card? Do you have a spare PC-Card NIC lying around or otherwise accessible?

The nic is integrated and I don't believe I have one lying around. That said, I have a box of cards somewhere, I'll see what's in there.

I was pointed to a KB article which seemed to sum up my problems exactly but following the steps did not cure my problem.

I'd try a NIC cable first thing and a NIC next...

I ran a plethora of patches and fixes and then rebooted my router for the 100th time and now it all works.

First thing I'd do, is read this -> http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/ptech/10/20/spying.with.google.ap/index.html

This -> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/21/google_desktop_security_vuln/

This -> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/15/google_desktop_privacy/

BEFORE installing any desktop app by Google. :x

Run this on this, and wave goodbye to problems like this, as well has having to reboot for anything short of a kernel recompile.
