This website claims it's legal to ship it here to the states but bars or stores cannot sell it. Either way I ordered a bottle. Those of you that are interested can wait for my review before you buy from this company. http://www.absinthesupply.net/ Check out this link too: http://www.strindbergandhelium.com/absinthe.html [ 09-28-2004: Message edited by: Cacophonous ] -------------------- ...

quote: The word absinthe is derived from the Greek absinthion, meaning "undrinkable."Wormwood is mentioned in the bible a dozen times, including the Revelation of St. John: "And the third part of the waters became wormwood, and many men died of the waters because they became bitter." The Russian word for absinthe is chernobyl. Leaves of the absinthe plant are an effective deterrent to vermin. Thomas Tusser, in his 1577 book July's Husbandry, notes "Where chamber is sweeped, and wormwood is strown, no flea for his life dare abide to be known." Pliny the Elder reported that the champions of Roman chariot races were given a cup of absinthe soaked in wine as a reminder that even victory has its bitter side. The "Purl" of Tudor England was a drink comprised of hot ale and wormwood. Samuel Pepys mentions drinking it in his diaries. At the turn of the century, the Pernod Fils distillery in Pontarlier, France produced 30,000 liters of absinthe a day, and shipped it around the world. The Pernod plant was struck by lightning in 1901, causing an alcohol fire that raged out of control for four days. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of burning absinthe were discharged into the Doubs River, flavoring it with anise for miles downstream. Celebrated absinthe drinkers included the painters Lautrec, Gauguin, Manet, Van Gogh and Picasso, along with the writers Rimbaud, Verlaine, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allen Poe and Jack London. Absinthe was banned by most countries in a fit of anti-alcohol hysteria earlier this century. Today it remains legal in Spain, Portugal and Japan. Thujone, the principal active ingredient in absinthe, is chemically similar to THC, and is thought to attach to the same receptors in the brain.

Marylin Manson claims he drinks it daily. He also says he carries straws with him but never drinks milk shakes. Wormwood is in fact posionous but the trick like everything is drinking it in moderation. Also Absinthe contains such a small percentage of wormwood so it's safe to drink. Of course I will drink it in moderation and find out what is my limit. Some friends from the UK are giving me advice on how to drink it and the best brand to purchase. I guess the French method is the best to drink it. Scooby I take it you never had the chance to drink in while in Europe. FS - I hope some of the others here checked out that link. Funny stuff. You've had it before right? I thought you said so in my old Absinthe thread. -------------------- ...

Received the bottle the other day and opened it last night. I poured us both a drink using the Louching method. Add one shot of absinthe to a glass. I put in about two shots. Place a sugar cube on a absinthe (slotted) spoon over the glass. I used a fork. Slowly pour spring water over the cube until it desolves into the drink. It took about the same amout of water as absinthe to melt the cube. I felt more than just an alcohol effect after drinking half the glass. I like it. Slightly bitter with a anise flavor. Not sweet at all really. I felt really good after just half my drink was gone. We stopped after the first drink which may have been a double. We both enjoyed it very much. I purposely stayed away from other alcohol and/or cannabis so I could feel the effects of the absinthe by itself.
I'm guessing that 2 or 3 drinks would have even more intensity. I wanted to do it slow just to make sure it reacted OK with us. Steph seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. Maybe next weekend we will try a more thorough test. =) -------------------- ...

I just ordered two bottles of La Fee Absinthe from France and a Absinthe spoon. From other reviews I read plus a recommendation by Gonville Bromhead VC it's supposed to be a good one. The shipping and handling is as much or more money than the price of one bottle. I think it's just under $200.00 for both bottles and one spoon. My review later. http://www.lafeeabsinthe.com/ -------------------- ...

I received the two bottles of La Fee from France the other day but the spoon is still on backorder and one bottle had a defective cap so all but a few drops leaked out soaking the packaging materials. My office smelled great the whole day. Like Anise. I had to explain to everyone that stopped by my office that I was smuggling illegal alcohol from France into our country. I emailed the distributor and they were very nice and accommodating about it. They were aware of a cap problem but thought they stopped the defective bottles from getting out. They are sending a new bottle out today. We plan on trying some Friday night so I'll give my review later. Right off the bat it looks better than the first one I bought. More natural green colour. Cheers! -------------------- ...

Ser reminded me that I never did post the review of the French Absinthe (La Fee) so here goes it: The La Fee last was quite a bit different than the Czech type we had first. Less bitter, sweeter and it 'louched' correctly. It turned very opaque/cloudy when water was added. I sort of liked the more bitter and less sweet Czech type but La Fee is probably more authentic and higher caliber. I found out if I skip the sugar cube and simply add about 3 parts cold spring water to the La Fee I like it much more. It's more bitter and less sweet that way. It turns cloudy just as it should. Great stuff! -------------------- ...

It's very strong alcohol so of course you get a buzz from that. There is sedative properties in the vaious herbs including anise and wormwood so it makes you very relaxed. I think it helps allow creativity flow as long as you are already creative. It opens doors. =) The most I've drank in one setting is two bottles. j/k actually Steph and I drank about 1/3 a bottle in one setting which is not that much but I did see some interesting colors. Marylin Manson said he drinks 1/2 a bottle before going on stage so that is 3 times what we drank. -------------------- ...
