Outtie - a note on home theatre. A couple of weeks ago we had our annual pool party (decreased activity this year. Only 19 gallons of Margaritas and Daquiries consumed .. last year 23 gallons). At any rate ( and as an end result of the potables consumed as listed above), my 7 year old Teac surround sound receiver burned up due to a failure with the 15" subwoofer. At any rate, had to replace both the SW and the receiver, choosing a Sony SA-WM250 8" 100w SW and a Sony STR-DE697 7.1 receiver. Man, I'm almost glad I blew the old shit up. The woofer's pretty tight, but that receiver is great ! I didn't know digital sound could be THAT much better ... whew ! Nah, I'm running just a basic 5.1 as the room wasn't wired for surrounds, only the rears. I haven't tried D3 on the 42"er as I didn't notice D3 having a 16:9 resolution mode available. I DID notice, however, those Hueys flying clean through my room, with the 3.5" rockets lifting my ass out of the chair in "We were soldiers" -------------------- No Sig

Ya know...I've been interested in this for quite a while, and I know you've had the HTPC thing for sometime now. I recently got myself a spiffy new tv...56" HDTV widescreen (upgraded from a massive 19"). I am discovering my old receiver and speakers aren't really up to the challenge anymore. It is a Denon receiver (dunno the model off-hand...prolly a lower end one, though), and I've got some nice Klipsch speakers (including a center), plus a Yamaha sub (again, dunno the model). They sound good, but they are a bit on the large side (doesn't bother me, but the wife has issues). The receiver and the subwoofer are most certainly my weak side. What do you recommend for a dedicated HTPC? What do you guys use? Keep in mind that I haven't built a PC in years, and have not kept up with technology. In other words, tell me what to do as if I were a 3rd grader Any pics of your setup? oh...and only 2 more months left of sea duty!!!

Hey LV ~ as per what I got: quote: At any rate, had to replace both the SW and the receiver, choosing a Sony SA-WM250 8" 100w SW and a Sony STR-DE697 7.1 receiver.
I think the total tab on those 2 were about $340 delivered. After that, you have 4/6 R&L speakers for 5.1/7.1 and the center speaker. Actually my Front R&Ls are Radio Shack Optimus speakers that I hestitatingly bought on recommendation from a friend, and was quite surprised at their sound quality. This was 7 years ago so I'm sure there might be better onew out there at a decent price. But they are small enough to keep the wife at bay. -------------------- No Sig
