OK, well I wasn't about to purchase this if I wasn't going to be able to run it. I'm currently below minimum specifications.

Northwood 2.0Ghz
256MB DDR 2600
Geforce2 MX 400 64MB

So I acquired a copy and installed the game.

I'm playing at 640x480 low settings all around. But the thing is, It's playing. I'll let you know if it's completely unmanageable later on this evening. The wife just got home and the suns in the wrong place to see the monitor very well and this game is dark.

I was able to walk around and interact with the people just fine but haven't gotten into da chit yet. I expect that is when it will become unplayable. I'm very very surprised that it's playing as well as it is at the moment though. Doesn't look bad either. Of course that's comparing it to what has come before. I am not going to get the good eye candy until such time as I can put the Gig of ram and a decent video card in here.

Just thought that some might find this info useful.

Dev

Well, I was talking with some people dev, and it seems as though ID exaggerated the specs a little. It's running fine on hardware that skirts the minimum and at higher settings.

Plus it might help that you have a fast CPU, and a fair amount of RAM. That helps.

I haven't received my new HW from NewEgg yet, so I've been running it on my old PC. 1.6Ghz P4, 512MB DDR 2400, 128 MB GF4 4200.

Very playable at 800x600 with mid-level graphics settings. I turned everything up once to see how great the game would look on faster hardware and was stunned at the quality, but could only manage about 5FPS with everything cranked.

ok, well consider my specs just below the real world minimum playable requirements. They're still a couple of things I can turn off but it's just minor shit.

Once I got to where I was going and the guy I was talking to freaked and shit went all to hell...

Well, while I've stumbled through a title in this fashion back when my trusty 200MMX was my biggest machine, I wouldn't do it today. Besides the title in question deserves better just so a person could enjoy it properly. With the gig of DDR Ram and a proper Vid card this box will play it just fine. But with the memory and video so out of date...It's basically a no play.

Report finished, Dev out.

AMD Thunderbird 1.4ghz
768megs PC133
GF4 MX nonamer.

640x480@LOW, all advanced options OFF. He ranges from 2-30fps.

AMD MP 2200+ (266 FSB)
1 GB PC2100 RAM
GeForce FX 5700 LE

I get about 15 - 40 FPS. The max seems to be in the 60's, and the minimum is always during heavy combat. 2 or more imps bring it down, but it'll take about 4 spiders to do equal fps damage, so it depends who you're up against. If you've got good aim, you'll pull through.

Don't even bother, Josh. I have a similar laptop (your proc isn't a centrino, its a Pentium M) but with a GF FX 5200 Go, and it barely runs UT2K4 decently.

Well, it runs fine at 8x6 medium setting on my system. It would probably run fine at High (I ran the timedemo at high), but to tell the truth, it makes only a marginal difference in the visuals, and I'll take the extra FPS. That being said, it's not much.

specs: Athlon XP 2600+ (barton)
512MB ram
Geforce FX5600XT 256MB

Cy - It should run it fine at 800 X 600 with medium graphics.

Mine runs it fine with those settings and my box is similar:

AMD XP 1700+
1.0 GB DDR SDRAM
GeForce III Ti200

Athlon 2500 XP
512 DDR (2700)

I've jumped a couple times

On my system it runs like a freaky bad cartoon nightmare.

I think I will need to upgrade just to appreciate the graphics that I bet are there.

Scary? Not on my system...more like frustrating like Q3arena on a lame assed 56k modem with packet loss.

Remember packet loss? HA!!!

I coulda told you that Cy It is truly the Ti200 holding you back. But a combination of that, your cpu and your memory is really robbing you of the experience.

It should be noted I am getting 52fps on timedemo

Mine runs pretty good with a Ti200 @ 800x600 with medium graphics, but I have 1 GB of DDR SDRAM.

Snag that is good for now but us guys with older cards like the Ti200 will blow that away soon enough when we upgrade shortly. I suppose you could upgrade again too. =)

See, that's what I was talking about in that other thread concerning how the then current hardware dealt with the release of q3 and how the same situation will repeat itself with doom3 and current hardware; Gleefully Happy-faced boastings of 52fps in time demos. Cac will be hovering around 300 fps in 1600X1200 doom 3 two years from now, but then, by that time snag will be bragging about 52 fps time demos of unreal 3 and cac will say something about guys like him with slower cards will soon be blowing that away when he upgrades.

Cac smiles at the thought.

I am contemplating going for a shiny new video card in the new year though and putting the 9800AIW Pro in a HTPC (which was the plan when I got the AIW in the first place).

BTW Dev, based on the topic, I think we need a thread for the spelling impaired

I hear you jondster, and I can definetely see that.

Doom's story line and graphics is a wonderfully welcomed change, but the gameplay is the same as any other id game. There's no major differences.

The thing with Doom is it pushes the envelope in regards to graphics. I guess you can say the same about HL2 but the thing about HL2 is I'm hyped because of it's gameplay, not the graphics. And Doom is vice-versa.

Yeah, I never really got into HL but I have to admit that HL2 looks promising. Not from the eye-candy standpoint but it also may have some substance.

It will be interesting to see what the Mod-ers do with Doom3 though

When you look at it though, HL2 is still a really straight forward game. All FPS are. Until they develop some complex system to where the game changes as you play it (multiple endings), FPS will all get boring :\
