Despite me in a very short time in the last 9 months racking up 9 demerits of an allowable 15 against my drivers license, my insurance went down on my truck MWHAHAHA...like $25/month

So...since it has been almost a year since my BIG ticket and I am locked into my insurance for another year, by the time that expires it will have been 2 and after 3 it is wiped out completely, I expect some good insurance days ahead for me.

I pay close to $4000 a year for the insurance on my car. Doesn't that make you want to vomit?

I have zero points and pay $2,200.00 per year for two cars. I have $50.00 comprehensive deductible and $500.00 for collision if my fault.

Steph started working for a major insurance company so we will probably switch when our current policy expires (and she gets her 90 days in) so we can get her 30% discount.

I have to pay about 1000 a year for full coverage on two vehicles, but I get 10% commision, so it's really only 900 a year.

Outrider are you talking the minimum coverage like PLPD or whatever they call it?

Or are the rest of being screwed because we don't know any better?

Our two cars are:

1997 Toyota RAV 4
1996 Chevy Cavilar

I go 500/500 on phy damage and slightly double the liability requirements. Main reason for price difference is geography.

our two cars are:
2004 lexus sc430
2004 hummer h2

Hey Outrider, explain this one to me. We recently traded in my wifes 1998 Ford Escort (good condition, 4 cyl, nothing special) that blue booked at about $3,500 (damn I hate Fords) and bought a 2005 Dodge Caravan (4 cyl, again nothing special) for about $20k. My insurance rates went DOWN $15 a year.

Have you ever heard of that before? I'm stumped trying to figure out how buying a newer, more expensive vehicle can result in reduced insurance premiums.

Was the escort a ZX2? That would explain it because a Caravan has a 8 maybe a 10 symbol, but those escort zx2's had a 15 or 16. Also, loss ratios on Caravans are really low making them a good risk for companies. Escorts are always getting wrecked

Drako - Of course outrider is the expert here so let's see what he has to say but I think it also has to do with the vehicle's rating for safety.

It does seem odd though...

Yeah I guess I meant the rating for risk.

Nope, wasn't a ZX2, but it was a "Sport". As far as I could ever determine, however, Fords definition of "Sport" merely includes changing the cloth pattern on the seats, slapping on some cheap cast aluminum wheels, and bolting on a laughable spoiler. Even the Ford dealership admitted that the engine and gearing were no different than any other standard Escort.

Personally, I always hated that car. It was a POS from the moment we brought it home and it gave us nothing but grief until the moment we traded it in. It was gutless, drank way too much gas for a car its size (my 4 door Mazda 626 got double its mileage), rattled and groaned incessantly, and the damned CD player would skip if you so much as farted while driving (it was actually unuseable on many roads).

I much prefer the Caravan for my wife

Grumpy...stop speeding and crashing you could have a decent rate! Stop drinking and partying and be responsible. Good rates come to those that earn them and prove they are not a risk. You have not done that. I fluked out by my insurance going down but I will tell you, those 9 demerits are the most I have ever had (and I don't know for certain i have those demerits...I should, but there is a possibility I don't)

Zippy...you just had to mention your $400 insurance on your $200 car

We had a Dodge Colt and when we put my Eagle Talon on there (for a whole month. gj me blowing it up) the rates went down.

Drako, what did the escort get? It should have been at least 25.

16MPG

With mileage like that, I coulda bought an SUV. Complained about it to the dealership numerous times too, but they kept insisting that nothing was wrong with the car and that we should "shut off the air conditioner and lighten up on the gas". Screw 'em, I'll never buy a Ford again.

The repair guys said the mileage dropped because the EPA tests with the AC off. Yeah, BS, I know, but I actually suspect I know what was causing the problem. HC's were fine when it was smogged so it was obviously burning it all, and the plugs always looked great when I changed them so it wasn't building up inside as carbon, and STILL the car had no power.

Personally, I suspect that's the reason why the mileage was so bad. The car was so badly underpowered for its weight, or so badly geared, that my wife had to be a bit of a leadfoot just to drive it like a normal car. In my 4 banger 626 I'm usually passing 80MPH before I pass the end of the ramp getting on the freeway (hey, this is California after all). In the Escort we were lucky to be doing 50 by the time we merged onto the freeway, even with the pedal ground into the floor. It's stunning lack of horsepower pretty much forced leadfooted behavior, which killed any chance it had of achieving a decent MPG rating.

You should have checked the compression across motor. Was it shifting fine too? That sounds really funny that it wouldn't accelerate at all. My '87 Accord ( http://www.intuitivefx.com/kyle/yay/thelegend.jpg ) gets like 30mpg @ sub-100HP. Even with a horrible transmission I can get to 70mph in no time (for the year and quality of the tranny).
