I noticed that there are some good photographers here. I really liked Xan's photos at Photos from my beach trip.

I wanted to know what kinds of cameras everyone uses because I've been thinking about getting a 5 megapixel camera, and getting into photography as a hobby. I want to get the best cameral possible.

Hey, outtie! It has been a while indeed. Like 2 years or something. I think I saw you last at F3D, or maybe it was Stranger's House. Good to see you are still around. Still tokin' too I bet.

I've got a Canon PowerShot A75 for shooting digital. It's only 3.2 MP, but the images look great and it's a rarity in that I can hand it to my wife and let her use it as a pointandshoot, or toss it into manual mode, change the lenses, and use it as a higher end camera.

I still do all my serious photography in 35mm though

I am just using an Olympus D395 for now

Maybe in a year I will get a real one.

I like the fact that you can change lenses on that camera. I definitely want that kind of versatility available to me when taking photos. I also like that you can record up to 3 minutes of .avi. You can't do anything serious with that, but I bet you could have some fun with it. BTW, I saw a pic of your camera, and it seems to have a mic. Do you ever get much use out of that?

That's a pretty inexpensive camera for 3.2MP. Do you ever capture any quicktime video with it?

I was thinking. It would be cool if we had a photography contest where everyone chose 1 image of their own to post. There would be a vote on the photos. They photo with the most votes won. It could be fun. Anyone the least bit interested in something like that?

They make Digital Camera's now!? What an age we live in!

The Olympus C5060 seems to be a good one, my mom uses a C5050 (previous model) and it's awesome. Pricey though.

The Powershot A75 just so you are aware doesn't really have interchangeable lenses. But you can get add-ons for it like Teleconverters and the like. I think that's what Draco is talking about. It's what you would call an advanced point and shoot. It has a combination of manual and auto modes.

If you're wanting fully SLR capable Digital camera equipment. Prepare to shell out for it. The camera bodies are not cheap.

I've recently bought a Nikon 995, and I really love it. They go for mid to upper $200's on eBay now days, and are a prosumer camera. The Nikon has a threaded lense so I can use UV/Polarizing filters, or Telephoto/Wideangle, etc. lenses. It's pretty damn nice.

I still use my Epson PhotoPC 750Z. It boasts an impressive 1.2 megapixels allowing for a resolution of 1182x864. Supposedly, it can exptrapolate up to 1600x1200 from that using a factory-installed piece of software, but in a tribute to the genuine care Epson feels for their customers and competence they demand on their production lines, that software was never present on mine. (which is actually the second one I owned. The first was DOA, replaced by the vendor) It's color reproduction has gone screwy. Or actually, has been screwy since the camera was about 18 months old. The reds started brightening to the point that maroons look like full-hue reds and full-hue reds look like fluorescent lamps. From looks at friends' and family members' cameras, Canon has some nice product avaiable. Also, I was surprised by how nice it was to have videos with sound on my roommate's camera.

Anyway, mine's over five years old, and so is pretty much any of my knowledge on the topic, so I don't really have anything useful to add. I just wanted to say hi. It's been way too long, mute.

I have the Olympus Stylus 410. I wanted a decent one to take with me when fishing and this one is weatherproof and takes damn good shots for a point and click. I also like things that are simple.
The wife has the Olympus C-720 which is a bit more complicated but again, a nice camera. I use it sometimes when we're out together or at home but I'd never take hers fishing. There's things on it I still haven't figured out. She may be upgrading to an SLR soon.

got an Olympus E-20 (Pal) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Olympus/oly_e20.asp

Nice camera, it's sort of semi-SLR, in the sense that it can do fully manual and it's got the components of a pro camera, but it's a tad slow and the main lens is not changeable withough a screwdriver and some special expertise. You can buy separate wide and tele addons though, which cost like hell.

The manual focus work as fly-by-wire =D

Mute~ AFAIK, the MIC is only utlilized when shooting video. The sound isn't too bad, but I've only used it to capture video a few times. The problem with using the A75 for audio and video capture is that your framerate is limited by the write speed of your CF card, and high-speed CF cards are extremely expensive. I use an older Lexar 256MB CF card in mine and can only capture at about 10-12FPS. Newer cards like the Sandisk Ultra II or the Lexar 40X can do much better, but at a commensurate price.

Oh, and the lenses are indeed external. The Powershot A series can best be described as a "professional point and shoot" camera. It isn't intended to compete with higher end prosumer cameras, but provides the flexibility to step above the limitations of your typical point and shoot. You can expand its focal range with external lenses, run it in fully manual mode for precision photography work, and its high quality CCD is amazingly error free and offers low noise in a wide range of conditions. I did a bunch of macro work with it at Sequoia National Park a few weeks back and the pictures turned out beautifully.

AW, unfortunatly I'm using a Minolta Maxxum at the moment. I originally bought it because it's incredibly light and easy to carry along on hikes and bike rides, but I've never been happy with the quality and am planning on selling it. One of my co-workers overbought a Nikon N80 and has no clue how to use it properly, and offered it to me fairly cheap, so I may be trading up in the near future (wife permitting)

Hiya Mute

I have a Sony 4.1 Megapixel, which I like quite a bit. My sister has a Canon 5.0 Megapixel (no sure what model number) and it takes the best pictures I've seen using digital.

I would get a Canon myself next time around for sure. Probably a Digital SLR model.

What I like about my Sony is the transfer of the pictures. When you connect the USB cable the memory stick simply shows up as a removable drive so you can cut/copy and paste them using Windows Explorer.

I have a Canon printer, so do my sister and my wife and we are all very happy with the print quality. Our models have separate color cartridges that cost about $9.00 each to replace.

Geez.. I've studied the specs for all of the cameras mentioned above, and I'm finding just how little I know about digital cameras and cameras in general. One thing is for sure. I want as much creative control as possible. I like to take snapshots, but I want to take photos on the order of Xan's stuff. Nice B&Ws with special lenses, the whole bit.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful input thus far. I'm going to take some time today to read a few consumer guides. Hopefully, by the end of the day, I'll have a much clearer picture of what I want.

I have an HP Photosmart 315 digital camera, a fairly old digital cam, but still takes good quality pictures.
