IT'S DONE!!!!!!!

Yes, this is the official word that DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! It won't be long now until the anticipation ends and the PH34R begins ;-) We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. Thanks to everyone for their patience (yeah right! =) and for everyone at id, Activision and our numerous partners for helping us create what I believe is absolutely the best game we have ever made.

So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with your local retailer for that information.

Internationally, the game will take a few more days to make it to the store shelves. The UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (que Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland). This isn't because we don't have love for you folks outside the U.S., but the localization and manufacturing process takes a bit longer outside the U.S. where we will have JVC run 24/7 to get the units built. I guess the European manufacturers prefer to give their employees nights and weekends off. Go figure!

The champagne is flowing here at id and smiles abound!

I'll update again with some DOOM 3 preparation tips (not what hardware to buy - you'll have to wait for a programmer for that sort of thing). In the meantime, I want to see those "DOOM 3 GOLD!!!" threads set new records for swamping message board servers, destroying productivity, and post counts ;-)

Recapping today's headlines....DOOM 3 GOLD!!!

I better order some Pampers...

I'll be picking this up on release day. Getting it to run smoothly will be the next step.

No computer today will run it like you want to run it. Look back when q3 came out and everybody was slapping 200 buck(or was it 300?) tnt2 ultras(today's x800s and 6800s) in their box to be "q3 ready"

Sure, you *thought* the game ran good on the tnt2 ultra until you saw running on your buddy's geforce ddr a year later, then you had to go buy another 300 dollar card.

Finally, around the Geforce3, you were running q3 the way you really wanted it, but heck, the geforce4 was out by then.

decisions, decisions

Actually, TNT2 was for Quake2. GeForce would be the equivalent for Q3A (GeForce2 to be exact).

No the tnt 1 was for q2, if I recall correctly, the tnt 2 ultra was the fastest card around just before q3 came out. Then the orignal geforce came out shortly after, but even then, q3's true sweet spot was the geforce 3 which came out a year or so after the game's release. So by around the end of next year, doom 3 should be cranking!

Q3 and the Geforce line of cards came out around the same time frame I think. I held off on buying a TNT2 Ultra because of it and later made a horrible decision (in buyin a Diamond Viper 2..savage..ugh).

Heh. I'll be able to run it okay on the new box. that's all I care about. It's only gonna be a 2600+ Athlon, GFX5600 256MB, 512MB of Ram. From what I've seen, and from what I understand. If it's coming out for the Current xBox, then that means my new machine will be more than enough to have all the spiffy eye candy on, and run fine at say 800x600 or so. Which is all I run games at anyway, even on super-high end systems.

Oh, and yes, It's going to have Multiplayer. But it's going to be more old school. 4 person, deathmatch, syncronous start just like the original Doom1 and Doom2. As well as a last man standing mode, but I don't know the specifics. Deathmatch will be super cool, you can shoot out lights etc.

[edit]

For Kyle, from the planetdoom site FAQ.

quote:
What kind of gaming rig am I going to need to run this puppy?
easiest way to sum it up is a Pentium 4 or Athalon XP, 512 megs of RAM and a top end video and sound card will give you the full experience of DOOM III. Although 1GHz CPU 256MB RAM GeForce or Radeon 7xxx series card will be sufficient to play at a minimum.

quote:
What will be the requirement for a graphics card?
The Platform for Doom 3 will be GeForce 3 and above cards but supposedly you can play it on a Geforce 1 but you will have to turn ALOT of the visual off to play. An ATI Radeon 9700 and GeForce FX5900 would be a safe bet.

Which is funny the FX5900 is WAY better than a Radeon 9700. Hell. . . a 9600XT is better than a 9700.

Quake 2: Released in 1997
RIVA TNT: Released in 1998
Quake 3: Rleased in 1999
RIVA TNT2: Released 6 months after TNT in March, 1999
GeForce: Released Fall of 1999

The GeForce 2 was in fact where Q3 really began to shine. I played it well on both my TNT and my Voodoo2 but as soon as I got my GeForce2 I was able to start cranking things up. It wasn't until I got my GeForce3 though that I was able to start going higher resolutions and/or FSAA.

Then of course my 9700Pro...well...1600x1200 with 8x FSAA and some anisotropic filtering in there and it REALLY looked the way I "wanted" it (some 5 years later but had no idea that was how I wanted it until I got there )

Zipperhead...you are wrong wrong wrong wrong DEAD FUCKING WRONG

ftr...fps on ANY console is GAY. Regardless of how pretty it is, fps is a mouse/keyboard concept, pure and simple.

add to that, mp on xbox only I do believe is a rumor that has long been dispelled. They just concetrated primarily on the sinlge player aspect of this game. For them NOT to put pc mpwould not only be suicide for technically bitchslapping the entire reason id software is where it is (the pc community) and the fact that id is one company that has not sold out to M$ it would be idiotic of them to not put it in the pc version. The archtecture is essentially a 5 year old pc running on a modified OS. It will look like shit compared to a souped up PC and not only that, they would lose a HUGE portion of their fan base if they went that way.

Oh, and they fact that they reviewed the MP here on a pc is proof:

as for consoles... i agree playing fps on pcs are better, but its still nice to play on a console as well(less crashing/no install problems/etc.)

as for my system sucks ass... fuck you i still kicked your ass for a few months, but your 3.2 reign will be short lived bubba...

Mine changed since I upgraded (haven't seen me much lately have you? BOOM SHICKA BOOM!!) and yours sure as hell will change within a month for the next 18 years. But you don't need me lecturing you...you do what is best for ZIPPY.

Just so you know, the benefit of having a PCI Express card is 0% right now. Its all hype to this point..benchmars don't show any improvements.

To be quit honest, I don't see the reason anyways. Everything I have read about graphics shows that the CPU is usually the bottleneck, not the bus.

The only thing that will slow the performance down for me is the video card.

Right now i'm sitting at:

P4 2.8Ghz
512mb of dual channel kingston ram
GeForce 3 Ti200

Just need a better video card and I'm set.

And with regard to multiplayer, from what I heard it will be 4 player multiplayer when it ships, but that number is scalable for future mods.

Oh there is a different in MP for PC and XBox.

XBox will have a co-op mode, PC won't (which completely sucks ass because co-op in Doom3 should be sick).

It won't take long for someone to develop a co-op mod for Doom 3. And if someone else doesn't make it, then ID will probably make it later on.

Controllers will never match the precision of a mouse.

By the way. Halo sucked. Hard.

They match the precision. Its all about thumb dexterity. Besides, lots of people play FPSes with joysticks, which are just giant controller thumbsticks anyway.

Like I told Snag, you just suck at games. Halo rocked.

I'll give the Gamecube control props though. Out of all the FPSes I've played on consoles (and hated), the Gamecube's controller rocks for FPSs. Three great examples of it's control are Bond, Timesplitters, and Metroid (although it isn't full 360 motion, it still rocks).
