I was trying to find a faulty breaker and most of the breakers in the main box are unlabeled. As I switched them off / on one by one (something I have done before) something went wrong. There was a loud "thumping" noise coming from my office. Turns out he power supply blew up and the thumping noise was really my sub-woofer picking up some kind of interference. Still, it gave me an opportunity to quickly waste 50 bucks in Best Buy.

Bet that made you mad, huh?

Damn, can't believe I had to edit a post as short as this one.

Not so much mad as stoopid. I was always under the impression that resetting a breaker was no worse than what happens during a power outtage and we've lost power PLENTY of times without my power supply blowing up. What pisses me off more is that there is a fuse in the ps and that was fine. I guess I should get that surge protector in ASAP, huh?

You probably should have bought one at the same time as the new power supply

Cheap surge protectors are crap and a waste of money. Good surge protectors cost almost as much as a low end UPS.

So get a UPS damnit!

I want a UPS system so bad, I want to do all my own postage from home. Screw buying stamps.

this one time....at band camp...
oops, wrong story

seriously, this one time I was at a warez buddy's house in Edmonton having a beer and smoking a bowl with another warez buddy/LAN party buddy and I am high as a fucking kite, know what i'm saying. I mean, I am snapped.

Anyhow, we are playing a game of Q3 when all of a sudden there is a loud bang and a crack. I damn near hit the ceiling. My buddy is like "fuck, you know what that sounded like?" and I said "No" in a George Thorogood kinda way. He says, that sounded like one of my 15000rpm platters being thrown" and I was in shock. This was his motha-fucka server he used for his 3-4 day lan parties. We had Beerapalooza coming up...this could not be happening. So we test the drives. Nothing wrong. Never did smell anything so we kinda ruled out a blown electrolytic...but be damn if one of those big bastard electrolytics didn't blow. That has been about 6 years now.

Me personally, I had a PSU failing. I knew it was failing. Back then I didn't care much for my cases...or psus. They were a joint investment. PSU dies, take it apart. Test a couple components (those that I could check without a schematics and white papers). Put it together and it works. System powers off. Power it on...it goes off. Power it on it goes off. I get pissed and put my fist through it, pull my stuff out, throw the thing across the yard and then over the six foot fence into the back alley. Go to the store to buy a new one and have never had another blow...I still maintain having all those drives in that system (3cd/cdrw, floppy, 2 ide, 1 10,000rpm scsi and a tape backup) with the video (TNT2 and a Voodoo2) did not help that for 250W PSU hehe (back before people really thought of wattage ratings too lol)

I just made the mistake of shutting my computer down after having it running for several months. When I returned from my little vacation the thing quickly heated up and died. I changed it for a weak 300 watt AMD and not the thing seems to be running fine.
