I heard one comparison by one of the Canadian justice officials. He said that downloading music from the internet is no different than photocopying information from a library which is also all copyrighted material.

that falls under the knowledge should be free arguement which everyone preaty much agrees on.

however some people would argue that music is not really knowledge.

thats not what i think, but just seems to be the most obvious argument imho.

The way i see it, the RIAA will have no choice but to concide to the way things are now. They can sue as many people as they want, but so far i have not seen any reduction of file sharing. CD sales are down at big chain stores, yet the CD sales at small time record stores are up. Sooner or later they will realize that $20 for a cd is about $10 to much to ask. I have no fear or respect for the RIAA and as for the artists the support them, they are maked down a few points in my book. I believe artists should be paid for what they do, but backing a "company" that steals from, lies too, and sues your fans is not a good way to win people over.

In Canada we have special taxes on CD-R(W)s... isn't that money going to the Recording industry?

*goes and finds a bit torrent client, fires up K++, Neomodus and anything else he can think of*

TK, yes, that's right. That's probably why the judge threw out the lawsuits. Basically, the tarrifs we pay on CD-R, CD-RW, Mp3 players, and I think DVDr(w) as well are given to the copyright board of canada for distrobution to the recording industry.

It's still stealing but whatever, we all do it.

Hat is right though. The bastards need to lower the price of CDs to under $10.00 if they want people to buy more CDs.

I still buy my fair share especially of my favorite bands.

You're right cac, it is stealing. But here it's legitmized through a compensation system. Like legitmizing prostitution, by taxing the hookers.
