I plan on dropping $300 into a digital cam at some point before summer, so I need to find out which one gives me the most for my dollar. But since I don't know shit about photography, I have no idea what's good and what isn't, what's necessary and what's not.

If you guys can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

I don't know any model numbers but I use a Olympus C50-50 which is probably just a tad out of your price range.

As long as you stick with a Cannon, Nikon, or a Olympus I think you'll end up with a good camera. Read http://www.dpreview.com/ before you buy anything. They are super thorough and very good.

i'm looking at the Olympus Camedia C-5000 right now. Looks decent, for $275 + SH.

Just because it costs more doesn't mean it's better.

I would buy one for $199 and as long as it had 3.2 and optical instead of digital focus capabily it would be great.

But I am also a cheap ass...

my philosophy: if you're gonna buy something, buy something that's more than capable, instead of settling for something that just cuts the mustard. If it's something you think you might upgrade if you're unhappy with it, go the next level up now and save yourself whatever amount of money on the lower models.

that's why my first TV is going to cost me eight thousand dollars

Fruxy, I think your best bet would be to get the Canon Powershot A70. Best Buy has it for $300, it's right at the top of your price range, but I think that it's probably the best one IN that range. Only 3.2mpx, but I don't think you'll find higher than that for $300 or less.

Things to look for...
GOOD BATTERIES... not proprietary batteries. Who wants to spend 50 bucks on a special battery.

Memory capibilities... try to get a compact flash one...not proprietary. 256 Compact flash cards are super cheap, I paid $70 for mine in Canadian..so that's what 40 US?

I'm pretty damn happy with my Pentax Optio 33L (3.2 MP, 3xOptical Zoom, AA Batteries, takes Compact Flash cards). Great outdoor camera, lacks a bit inside without flash on with the default options. The program mode does a better job inside. It was only $349 Canadian... so that'll easily fit in your budget.

Canon uses CF cards. And the A70 uses AA batteries.

I personally don't buy Gateway stuff (I'd doubt any of us do) but I saw this advertised on TV ... 5 Mpx for $300 US is worth a look.

AW - I've found the A70 for $228. Compared to the C5000, it doesn't seem to do as much. Besides, the C5000 is 5.2 mpx, and $289 + SH (no tax b/c I'm in Ohio ). Also, I can buy a waterproof housing for the camera so I can take it with me diving, which would be totally sweet.

TK - The C5000 takes Lithium Ion batteries, so that's not too bad. Not a big fan of shoving AA batteries in a camera, I don't trust the battery life. And even though xD cards are proprietary, I still don't need an insane amount of storage. I could manage probably about ~90 pics with a $70 128 MB card.

I like Cannon, Nikon, Sony & Olympus.

I have a Sony 4.1 megapixel which I really like. I bought it for $300.00 but it was a ad typo and should have been $400.00 but they gave it to me for $300.00.

One feature I love is that you don't need to have any software installed to download the pictures. It shows up as a removable drive in Windows explorer where you can copy/paste or better yet cut/paste where you want to store the pics.

My sister has a Canon 5.0 megapixel which she swears by and she has taken some professional looking pics with it.

You won't make me spend any, cause 1) I don't have any money

and 2) this is the only Digicam I would buy. http://www.canoneos.com/digitalrebel/index.html

Why?

Nikon is no different than Canon, Nikon just trades on it's name.

Canon has the better lenses anyway.
