I want a glass of absinthe! http://www.allthingsabsinthe.com/ Van Gogh drinking absinthe Absinthe is flavoured distilled liquor, emerald green in colour, turning to cloudy, opalescent white when mixed with water. It inspired many prominent artists, writers and poets. Just to name a few - Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Manet, Ernest Hemingway - in fact his masterpiece " For Whom The Bell Tolls " was written under the influence of "The Green Fairy". Absinthe was first produced commercially in 1797 by Henry-Louis Pernod, who purchased the formula from a French exile living in Switzerland.
Artemisia Absinthium is the chief flavouring ingredient, native to Europe and Asia.; other aromatic ingredients include aniseed, licorice, hyssop, fennel, angelica root, star aniseed... Wormwood is a long-lived plant, with greyish-green leaves and the flowers have a greenish-yellow tint, and like leaves give off a strong aromatic odor and are bitter to the taste. Thujone is a toxic chemical present in wormwood and has a similar molecular geometry with THC, the active chemical in cannabis. You place the absinthe spoon with the sugar cube upon the empty glass and then pour the absinthe over the sugar cube into the glass. Then you light the sugar cube on fire with a match. The sugar caramelizes in a light blue flame and the absinthe ignites with a clean blue tongue of flame as well. You then drip the water over the sugar cube as in the normal sipping instructions, thus extinguishing the flames which further dissolves the sugar and louches (clouds) the absinthe. The burn method seems to create a richer texture to the absinthe. You may decide to write, draw, play, listen to music, or just wander mentally or physically wherever you wish. However, please wander responsibly, preferably not in a car. To sip absinthe in a crystal glass with a silver spoon and already be in the desert or woods might be delightful. So would just being Home. The mystical awaits you... http://www.absintheoriginals.com/page7.html http://www.absintheworld.com/links/faq.html [ 03-06-2004: Message edited by: Cacophonous ] -------------------- ...

I could just make my own. I have access to a still, and I have we have this wonderfully ENOURMOUS wormwood plant in our front yard Never tried it. I don't think it's illegal in Canada, but I could be wrong. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

FS - Actually the stuff with 'Thujone' which you refer to as THCish, is very legal, especially in parts of Europe. Although the law is a bit murky it can be imported to the US. I posted this link above: http://www.absintheworld.com/links/loganfils.html I heard Marylin Manson in an interview say that he drinks it almost exclusive.

JESUS CHRIST @ that price... =Owe got something here that's 60% alcohol, costs 35 euros, and is low on but not completely free of the THC-thingy. It's called père kermann's absinthe. -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one

http://www.absintheliquor.com/absinthe_instructions.htm I'll be damned, I could order the basic incredients right from Sweden, and all I need to do is mix with alcohol, no distilling involved! Bloody cheap too! -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one

well, if that's what restaurants and bars do, I think it's good enough for me, and they do make a good point at the end here: quote:
You do not have to pay US$100-$160 for a good bottle of absinthe: one that perhaps contains the same essence you will use.
Mind you I wouldn't make Scotch by mixing "malt essentials" with alcohol, but I don't think I'm qualified to critique the finer points of Absinthe brands Probably not that many other people ae either... And to do some more self-back-patting, the BEST Salmix shots are made by mixing ground "Turkish pepper" candies with vodka, whereas the pre-made stuff tastes pretty horrible at worst. -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one
