It was an unusual weekend that we saw three movies. All three are up for awards or have recently won them (or both).

1) Lost in Translation

This one we saw on Friday via DVD at home. I expected this to be great from the reviews but it was just good not great. It is a fairly funny movie with a good but average story. Cool footage shot in Tokyo.

2) Mystic River

We saw this one on Saturday night at the theatre and it was exceptional. I highly recommend this movie. Excellent acting by Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon & Tim Robbins who played childhood friends that grew up in Boston. Twenty five years later they are reunited by a tragic death of one of their daughters. Also stars Lawrence Fishburne. Great movie go see it while it’s back in the theatres.

3) Monster

Saw this one at the theatre on Sunday. Another great movie with excellent acting by Charlize Theron and Christine Ricci. I highly recommend that you all go see it.

From website: It's a true-life story of Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute executed last year in Florida after being convicted of murdering six men. Nearing suicidal despair, Wuornos wanders into a Florida bar, where she meets Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), a young woman sent by her parents to live with an aunt in order to "cure her homosexuality." Wuornos—victim of a tragic, abusive upbringing—quickly falls in love, and clings to Selby like a life preserver. Unable to find a legitimate job but desperate to sustain her relationship with Selby, Wuornos continues working as a prostitute. When one of her johns turns violent, Wuornos shoots the man in self-defense; the first in her tragic string of killings.

you ought to check out The House of Sand and Fog. It's extremely sad but really good. I really hope Ben Kingsley wins the oscar he was nominated for. And Jennifer Connelly's performance was good, too, although I think she was miscast (too strong for the character's role, although I can't complain too much. I think she's probably one of the most beautiful women alive)

And I saw part of Lost in Translation last thursday. My roommate downloaded it on our neighbor's computer and we and one of her roomates watched it. I maintained consciousness the longest but I don't think I was awake much past the point where Murray's character and the chick decided to go out on the town (right after the photographer told his wife to make friends).

Having read the book and being so affected by the writing, the story and the characters, I found it hard not to compare it to the movie which was disappointing to me. (I LOVED the book.)

I agree, Ben Kingsley deserves the Oscar. As does the woman that played his wife, Nadi (Shohreh Aghdashloo) for her supporting role. They were incredible!

Jennifer Connelly was completely inappropriate for the role of Kathy. (In the movie Kathy comes across as more of a victim than in the book which might explain the casting decision.)

The Oscars, over the years, have degenerated into nothing more than the most pernicious kind of nepotistic farce. People who deserve to win almost never do. . .not unless they are the popular A-List people.

The Oscars are BULLSHIT.

Thanks for the tip Willy. I'll check out The House of Sand and Fog.

I liked Mystic River the best of the 3 I just listed.
