My dumbass kids managed to get themselves "IP banned" from their favorite SOF2 server, and now are bellyaching to me about it. Although my IP is supposed to be “dynamic” with Comcast, it doesn’t seem to change too much. This obviously makes it impossible for them to get on the server via a change in IP made by the IPS dynamically.

First, is there any way of “spoofing” an IP to beat this ?

Are any of you familiar with IP banning ? Meaning, if an IP (that is banned) is 123.45.67.89, is the banned applied to the last octet number specifically - “89”, or would the ban be applied to the third octet, “67” – therefore effectively banning all 255 IPs in the 67 node and preventing entry by a banned player if his IP assignment was dynamically changed ?

Yeah, yeah, I know ... the little prickz were banned for a reason (excessive team killing) and should shut-up and take their medicine. HOWEVER, what if I want to use this server?

If you have a different brand router laying about, try using it, that sometimes will kick in a new ip for ya when you first set it up, or maybe just leave the modem turned off overnight then reboot it, sometimes that does it to when you're on cable. I'm guessing you're on cable.

What outie said, also, try rebooting the router. It is, infact possible for the server to ban the third octet, and probably higher. I've heard of servers banning entire countries' ip ranges before.

Yeah, Out - cable.

Hmmm, how dumb of me. Yeah, the IP isn't going to change if the connection is never broken (i.e., modem turned off).

If you're using a router, look in the setup page for a place to change the MAC address. If it let's you change it just make one up or change a couple characters and reboot it and you'll probably end up with a new WAN ip. Might have to try a few times. Works all the time for me.

The problem with that might be was that I watched the installer register the MAC with the server. I suppose I could try it as long as I write down the real MAC in case I can't get back in ...

Like Dam said, some models of router let you change the MAC adress of the public IP adress. If that is possible, take an existing MAC adress and just edit it but make sure that it's not the same as one of your network card on your home network.

The first half of the MAC adress represent the number of the company (in this case it's a 3com) and the last half of the number represent the serial number of the network card itself (MAC adress are always in hexadecimal).

Example:
00-50-04-D8-3B-38
3com ID-nic serial #

And yes it as also possible to ban a whole class of IP or even all the IP's of an ISP in games using the Quake 3 engine.

When you also upgrade the firmware of a router or reset it to factory default, it will go back to it's original MAC adress but like you said it's also a good idea to take it on note.

I remember when some IRC servers banned completely my old ISP. It didn't matter any IP adress I got from my ISP, all of the IP's where banned at the source of the ISP on the IRC servers (one of the many reasons I changed my ISP).
