I wouldn't call it a waste of money. Hell, some people would call upgrading a pc a waste of money since the one you have works. Depends on what is entertainment to you and how much you willing to spend on it. Hobbies. Some people prefer to watch movies using a progressive scan stand alone or htpc hooked in to a widescreen hdtv coupled with 5.1 or 7.1 home audio system complete with real powered subs instead of staring at crappy divx images on a computer monitor with audio downgraded to shitty-sounding two channel sound. There is nothing like watching a good dvd on a 47 inch or bigger widescreen hdtv with TRUE dolby digital sound as far as movie entertainment at home goes. Bass so deep you can feel it in the floors and walls. Clear big picture. Can't do that with your divx collection even if it is free, lol. That's a nice collection there, Riv.

That would definately be awesome But with a 32" 100Herz Widescreen and a full surround-system, I'm in no hurry quote: Originally posted by Cyborg6: Dude, what a waste of money.I have a few DVD files on my hard drive.
I was going to say something here, but never mind...I think Outtie put it nicely. quote: Originally posted by Redlemons: Band of Brothers box setum... Band of Brothers box set. That is all.

This IS pretty subjective. If I EVER get employed, I'll probably strap my ass into $5K of debt for a Phillips 42" Plasma. My Ex Boss wants me go do a complete re-do of his home ent center. Right now he has a 50" or so 16/9 projection-type HDTV and a 20 yr old high-end stereo system. He wants me to build him a new computer that can tie the TV, a new 6.1 stereo, the computer and some other shit all together. The computer HAS to have DVD burning, CD burning, a 9500 ATI all-in-fucking-wonder, and probably a SB Audigy. Guess I'll have to read up on this ... Sounds like fun, doesn't it ? -------------------- No Sig

I would not ever buy a plasma, they are very, VERY prone to burn in.A little tip: If you plan on buying a hdtv of ANY kind in the near future, MAKE SURE IT HAS HDCP DVI CONNECTIONS. There is talk now that component inputs are either gonna be rezzed down or you won't even be able to see the channel! Regular DVI will not cut it either, has to be HDCP DVI. Most new, higher end models have HDCP now, but there are still thousands out there in showrooms that don't and the salesmen are not going to tell people about this, they want to get rid of their stock before it becomes basically, well, obselete. Roughly 4 million people have hdtvs out there right now and prolly 95% of them only have component input for hdtv, but that won't stop hollywood, hopefully congress will step in and call it BS. DirectTV has been testing a channel with HDCP DVI the last couple weeks or so, so it is coming. Jon, audigys are not very good for htpc if that is what your client is looking for. You can get a M-Audio Revolution 7.1 for prolly a hundred bucks. Also, running a pc to a projection screen is tricky cuz you definitely dont wanna go S-Video.
If your client's proj tv only has component inputs, you'll need a transcoder. And you'll have to use powerstrip to get the right settings otherwise you could actually damage your tv. I'm pretty sure the 9700 AIW has a transcoder built in. Otherwise a seperate transcoder will run ya bout 150 bucks give or take. If you want I can point you to some boys that know their shit big time when it comes to htpc. They have a very nice forum. SOme of those cats have 200k and up dedicated home theaters, heh. Dude, what a waste of typing time. I love watching movies and I watch them many times (not in one night though). Different folks for different strokes. I don't know how many DVDs we have but it's probably around 30. When we move house and have a proper filing/cataloging system in place I will try and increase the collection. It sucks when you go to a video store for a movie and all the DVDs are out so you have to get your movie on VHS, the quality sucks what Tea Bagger shaves. -------------------- (_*_)
