How about the poor bastard who has to drive the car in circles, that must suck. There's Big Ben..........again! -------------------- (_*_)

What gets me about NASCAR is the fervent belief of the "true" fans that the Pontiac or "Shivvie" or Dodge out there actually bears some degree of relation to what they could possibly purchase at their local dealership....Combined with the equally fervent efforts by the ruling body to make sure the Pontiac, Shivvie, Dodge or Ford will bear absolutely no resemblance to what Earl Mullet in the stands could possibly purchase at his local dealer. To wit: 1. Acid dipped metal and plastic body made in the image of some real vehicle, but has to be constantly checked with templates to make sure it conforms to weekly-changing rules. 2. Said vehicles are practically all front wheel drive. Mystically convert to RWD for this competition. Hell, Ford even mystically makes a Taurus a 2 door (instead of a 4 dr sedan) for this. Ask the salesman to see one of those on the lot. 2. Said vehicles sold to the public generally have multivalve overhead cam V6s, measuring 3.0 to 3.8 liters (that's 183 to 231 cu. in. to you Playstation2 owners) with fuel injection in order to acheive EPA mandated emissions and fuel economy standards. Once again, mystically the motors become somewhat generic custom-cast 360+ cu in V8s with 2 valves per, pushrods, and 4 bbl carbs. "Yup, that Shivvie small block shore does haul ass". "Huh ? You mean like the same one that's in that Ford over there ?" 3. THEN, in the spirit of good ole Amuricun tweaking, the good ol' boys manage to get too much horsepower out of that archaic but venerable design, causing the cars to go too fast (it's a race, now isn't it?). So the "ruling body" steps in and mandates "restrictor plates", artificially determining how much fuel/air can be had, and causing the good ol' boys to venture of into other areas to tweak or cheat the rules. But then again, who'd pay to see a bunch of stock Ford Tauruses and Shivvie Monte Carlos run around in circles ??? Let alone the whole idea of placing an ad for Viagra on the hood or fender of a family sedan ... The beauty of NASCAR originally was (when it first started) that the racers were thought to either be using their racing vehicles to transport illegally distilled potables during the week, or learned their driving skills piloting their "tankers" with the "revenuers" in hot pursuit. Maybe not entirely true, but definitely the stuff legends at least get a start with. Today, I can't imagine Jeff Gordon drinking anything but Perrier. Johnny Benson is from Grand Rapids, and has no reputation for doing bars to excess, let alone supplying them with his family vehicle outfitted with a 500 hp motor and a 100 gallon "cargo" tank [ 02-05-2003: Message edited by: jondster ] -------------------- No Sig

Burb ~ 1. I didn't say it sucked. Perhaps I inferred that it's credibility suffers in my opinion.2. Damn - YES. Those are stock - bodied dinosaurs that, YES, you COULD actually purchase Question: Approximately when did NASCAR go from stock bodies to panel / cage-frame construction ? When FWD / unibody construction became the norm ? Question: If KIA or Hyundai sponsored a look-alike-but-streamlined body mounted on a Roush frame and motor, and it actually placed well. Would Korean econo-box sales increase in the Carolinas because fans would think that those kim chee burners actually go fast ??? No Kane, hopefully not sounding insulting, I don't believe you've ever looked closely at or into one of these. There's no "modification" involved. Like Burb says, there is absolutely NO resemblance to the vehicle they are supposed to represent other than : 1. Runs on gas 2. Has 4 wheels 3. Looks vaguely / kinda / squint-your-eyes-and-imagine-it-on-the-street like something you might be able to buy to drive. -------------------- No Sig
