Just installed a dvd in my pc. I thought since Win2000 had a player I wouldn't need anything else but whne I insert a movie it pops up and tells me I either don't have enough video memory another application is using the resources or my Geforce2 mx is incompatible with the dvd decoder.
PIII 866
GF2 mx
12.9 detonators
256mb ram
what the heck do I need to do?

That's strange I'm running win2kPro, GF2MX 32mb with the 12.41 detonators and a Asus 8x DVD. No problems.

Yeah, odd. I dl'd a demo of Power DVD and it works fine. Don't know why the Windows one won't work.

It doesn't work because it's windows, that's why.

That's what I figured AW. So I found a copy of Power DVD and it works fine now. Also will play with WMP now too. Oh btw: I just install XP Pro today also. So far so good.

actually, it didn't work cause because despite mediaplayer supports dvd, that feature under win9x and 2k is not enabled by default (cause of the lack of the software decoder). You need a software decoder installed if you do not have a hardware decoder...windows by default does not contain one. Hence the reason it all worked one PowerDVD was installed.

And WinXP supports dvd playback right outta the box.

Thanx for all the input guys. Hey snag, what's the best way to lan this XP machine with 2 Win2000 machines? We're all 3 hooked into a simple hub and so is the cable modem. All have their own ip's so I don't need to use ICS. I think I got it working through ipx/spx on but wondered if that's the proper way.

DJ, (iirc from that stupid MCSE book) I think you can just enable the file and print sharing on all the machines, then share the appropriate folders and files. Don't forget to put all the computers into the same workgroup, and to share the files and folders you want. WinXP uses basically the same networking structure (from what I can see on my own machine anyway) so it should be pretty much the same as Win2k.

[edit]
Don't forget that once you enable sharing that each machine is going to be an open book to anyone on the net, so make sure your firewall works the way it should.

The built-in firewall seems to work great AW. At least it shows up as Stealth on grc.com after a port probe. I'm not going to take the ipx protocol out though. It's working so I'll leave it like it is.

yeah that is one thing that perplexes me...WHY is it you cannot unbind file sharing through tcp/ip like you can with Win9x?? I mean...if you have a network, you WANT to have a shared folder....but who the hell wants it to be open to the public...

Um, Snag. . . file and print sharing is a function of TCP/IP style networks. . . it'd be like trying to use TCP/IP without a network adapter. Simply doesn't work that way. TCP/IP is used to access domain style networks, and in case you haven't noticed. . . the WWW is a domain style network. Provided your firewall is working properly and that your permissions are setup properly, you should be fine.
