heh, 256mb wasnt enough. I just got another stick of pc2100 ram... so now i have 512mb ddr sdram...but, when my computer boots up, it says its only running at 133mhz. is that normal?

and is there a way to optimize my system now that i have more ram? i remember reading about changing the way windows manages memory but cant remember that. and what should my com_hunkmegs be in quake3 then?

soo many questions so little time..oh yeah, today was my first day of college. it sucked. i just got my timetable today--i have a 30hr week apparently, im taking the hardest course (Computer Systems Technology) at BCIT (BritishColumbia Institute of Technology). the 2nd year students were all like--"what program u taking"
me: "CST.."
him/her/all of them: "oh shit, have fun" (in a sarcastic tone)

jon is not happy.

I don't know about the RAM showing as 133. . . I don't have much experience with the DDR stuff. But if you want to make windows manage memory a little better:

right click on My Computer, then click properties
click the Performance tab
Click the button labeled 'File System'
Where it says 'Typical role of this machine' click on the drop down box and select network server.

You'll have to reboot. Honestly though, you won't really notice much of a change unless you're doing REALLY memory intensive stuff.

What happens if you remove the new stick? There always is the possibility of you getting slow memory by mistake.

Are you talking about your swap file? (Wolfie actually knows something about computers???)

yeah, by manually setting the swapfile (i think) cuz windows sucks at managing large amounts of memory ... (ski11z trying to sound smart:P)

actually, before i put the stick of ram, it was still reading 133mhz...

<--Doesn't know much about hardware including RAM sticks

However I could talk you through the swap file process. *lol* I feel smart now! yay!

The reason why using the swap file is slower is 'cause it's using hard drive to act as RAM, and due to it's mechanical nature it's slower than normal RAM. Also, Windows automatically resizes the swap file as it is needed. This sucks and takes up time!

By minimalizing the size of the Swap file and refuse to let it resize, you can speed up your computer a bit. I tried this on my 200 mhz and I didn't notice much difference! But now I'm on a 850... yummy yummy!

Go to control panel, System, then click on the 'performance' tab. Click the "Virtual Memory" button, and a screen should come up being scary and warning you that playing with your memory files might cause windows to not work. ignore it!

Your radio buttion is probably on "let windows manage my virtual memory settings".

Click "let me specify..."

If you have different drives or partitions, stick it on the most uncluttered one, this will help as well.

Now change the minimum and maximum to the same number... I would recommend 60mb. Enough to get you out of trouble if your system needs more RAM. If your system crashes often after this, change it to a higher number.

Hope I helped!

so if you have 64mb ram, it should be set at 128mb.

i couldnt set it to 1024...lol. so i tried your method and just put like 1...heh. ill change to 60 in a second. anyways thanks

133mhz is the clock speed the RAM is running at.

133mhz * 64 bits (bus width) * 2 (double data rate) = 17024 million bits per second bandwidth, or 2128 mb (that's where they got the PC2100 part)

similarly, PC2400 ram is running at a 150mhz bus, and PC2600 runs at 166mhz, etc, which is totally wankable

I got PC-100 SDRAM. In the BIOS settings I set it to run at 133mhz to reflect my 133mhz fsBus. You guys think I'm playing with fire or no?

Nope. Not at all, unless you start getting blue screens of death BSOD

I am running a PC66 stick at 133 currently, with no issues at all.

Swap file should be set more to 2.5 - 3.5
I've got 224mb and it's at 725.
Previously, I had 500mb for my 128.
I've also placed it on a seperate partition devoted for swapfile. The best thing would be to have a separate hd devote to swap file, but that's going overboard.

lol@Snag. . . don't you know. . . you can NEVER get rid of VM!

Snag, I would advise against a gig of RAM, hell I'd advise against anything over 512MB. . . not if you like running win9x/ME. You'd have to entirely switch over to win2k. And you could pretty much kiss goodbye any 16bit apps that WILL run under Win2k (yes, there are apps that will. . . just the other day I ran Accpac Plus for DOS under Win2k)
