How can a CD Burner just STOP working? Last week i was burning hella cds (CDRW's), then all of a sudden today i decide to burn a backup cd for my other computer, my software doesnt even detect my burner as a burner. I just uninstalled my EZ CD Creator, and now am gonna reinstall a more recent version. But in my device profiler, my CDR is only recognized as a CD Player...

That's what I told him to do. Get NTI Pro, but he likes adaptec. . . each to his own I guess.

Yeah, Adaptec is a bitch in XP since XP has the built in cdr-w drivers, it will bitch at you trying to install cause a certain driver will be overwritten...overwrite and you are fucked, don't overwrite and EZCD will bitch and whine saying that such a yadda yadda driver is not installed properly do you wanna continue etc...

Anyway, enough bitching about XP...first off we need some specifics: is it in windows or in the POST that it is saying it is just a cdrom? Cause if it is just in windows it is obviously a driver problem. If it is in the POST it is saying that, you obviously have a firmware problem. If it is suddenly just STOPS in the middle of a burn it could be a fubarred laser (mis-aligned beams, burnt out servo, etc...). If it suddenly stops reading it could do this too, or it could also be a contaminant on the lens (dust, hair smoke etc...)

Need more information Jon!!
