We just got a DVD player and home theatre recently. It has more options than I've seen in ages. So what's the best setting for surround sound? Dolby Surround or the 5.1 surround? Anything else I need to know to get it tweaked to maximum pleasure?

Well. . . having actually set on up myself, I think I can claim to have some expertise in this area.

First of all, if you use regular Dolby Surround, your missing the whole point to having a Digital Home Theatre. Dolby Surround, in laymen's terms, is basically 3 Channel stereo (L+R Front, Center) with the rear speakers cross phased and on a delay(yep, that's about as dumbed down as I can make it). Dolby 5.1 and DTS Digital Surround sound systems, ar MUCH better. Each speaker is operates on it's own independent sound channel, giving you drastically better spatial dynamics(and the ever so cool, I'm sitting in the middle of the action feeling). the '.1' in 5.1 just represents the Subwoofer channel. The choice is clear. . . Dolby 5.1, if you don't use it, I will come to your house and break all your DVD's

As far as setup goes. . . the default settings for delay and distance are usually pretty good. . . if you're going to be sitting in the center, between the main speakers(L+R front, L+R rear, with the center directly infront, usually on top of the TV). If you're going to be off-center then you'll need to consult the manual of the surround sound amp on how to setup the distances. Each amp is a little different so I can't really help you there, but the manual usually includes the proper procedure and distance settings (most amps don't actually program according to distance, they usually give a number from say 1-6 or something.)

Hope that helps a little, I think I might have confused you even more.

Yeah, i've been watching DVD's a lot now that i got one in my new computer (The Matrix, Blade, Dangerous Grounds, and Mortal Kombat) I never had a problem with the matrix, but with the other three, when i watched them, and turned up the speakers, i kept on getting a buzzing sound (like--white noise). I dont know how to get rid of it. Right now I'm using Creative's Soundblaster Live! 5.1 and Cambridge FPS1500 (Four point sound... four speakers, one subwoofer..no center channel). Know of a way to fix this? I tried adjusting the sound volume on the computer...etc, but still got that damned buzzing sound

lol you're welcome DJ. . .

Ski11z, check your volume control settings(in windows), and raise you master volume until the hiss goes away. You may want to turn down the volume knob on the speakers though.

I did that... It's weird how it only hisses when i play back DVD's... maybe it's something in the dvd software. Speaking of which, when i was using it, i checked the "information" tab in the configuration settings (ASUS DVD 2000 Player btw) and it said there was hardware accelleration, etc, but it didnt say that it was using the audio hardware.

Jon...the problem is with the Asus DVD player. It is actually Cyberlinks PowerDVD...which has a slight flaw in it's audio, hence the hiss. I get it too. But alas, I sold my decoder card since DXr2 is incompatible with AMD. I still wanna get me a Hollywood card or something cause as nice a job as the software and the GF2 do, it can't beat something dedicated to a certain task...namely DVDs.

BTW, you can use your AsusDVD cd-key and use it in Cyberlinks PowerDVD to upgrade to the latest version from Cyberlinks website.

I guess I could do that. . . but I won't

I use Asus DVD 2000 too. It works pretty good. . . definitely better than I thought it would, but NOTHING compares to a component DVD player and a proper digital home theater. Oddly though I don't get a hiss. But then again I use an actual stereo system for speakers so the amp in the stereo probably helps clean it up.

Hmm.. i finally figured out what the problem was. Last week I bought an audio connector (for my CDRW to my Soundblaster Live! card). It's connected to the "AUX" connection on the sound card. I muted the AUX sound in my sound control panel in Windows, and the buzzing stopped. I guess the static came from the audio connector. Too bad i cant return it anymore since i threw away the package But, if anyone knows how to salvage it, please feel free to jump in and give in a few tips.
