I'm gonna buy myself a sword for my birthday. I've been looking into some really nice swept-hilt rapiers, but a few renissance(sp?) knight type swords have also caught my eye. And then there's the ever present desire for a nice Claymore.

Any suggestions?

Aren't swords pretty expensive? Are there any pics out on the net that would show what you have been considering?

Yeah, swords are cool. I'm thinking Nodachai(sp?) myself. . . but I didn't see one there. It's a Japanese long sword. . . think a 5.5ft long Katana.

Watch out for swords generally under $1000 since there made to show and not for play, like most of the jap katanas. Most of these types of swords, the handle is usually plastic. So if you were to wack something or just swing hard constantly, the blade could fling off.

Brock~ Actually, there are quite a lot of functional swords for under $1000, but I'm looking for something more decorative anyways. It's not like I have anyone around me that I can spar with (besides, I'd pickup a few kendo blades for that).

I allready knew about SwordsOnline Great site. There's also http://www.christianfletcher.com/index.html , I'm not sure, but it looks like he makes the swords, or just deals in a few at a time, but they look to be quite good.

Gaah, so hard to decide. While I do enjoy a good Katana, etc., I'm looking more for something medival, like a rapier or broadsword.

Oh well =/. I'll have to check to see if there are any sword/gun&knife shows around here.

This one looks nice http://www.christianfletcher.com/catalog/angustrim/armingswordpage.html

Too bad it's a bit more than I wanted to spend, especially w/ a scabbard. But I've got a bunch o' stuff to sell on ebay, so who knows

Well, I ended up getting an Excalibur replica for the time being. I was on the way home from a trip to the Upper Pennisula for a weekend of camping, and my dad spotted a gun/knife/sword shop, so we stopped in. There it was (one of the only ones w/ a wall mount) it was a good price ($100), and right there, so I had to pick it up. It's just for display(Plastic Handle (Metal in middle) and all ), but it does have a very sharp blade. We had to file it down.

So that soothed my obsession with swords for a few days, right now I'm saving up for one of the longswords by Christian Fletcher.
$600 for everything I want (including custom scabbard)... only $470 to go =)

THIS is the one I'm saving up for =)

Then I'm gonna get a shield or a rapier, depending on how much wall space I've got

I got a cheapo sabre from the sportsmans guide a few months ago. It's made in india and only cost $20. And it's kinda rusty now.

But it still gets a great effect when I hold it high out the window of my motorbeast while I rumble by screaming like a lunatic.

it's pretty dull but for such a cheap piece, it's balanced surprisingly well. I want to get some kind of two-hander though. I think a 5-6 foot blade would much better suit my stature. Or at least something designed for hand-to-hand rather than mounted combat. Still, it's fun to take it out in the back yard and swing it around for a bit. Good excercise, too.
