I want to make a communication program similar to ICQ, and I want to know what programming language would be best to do that.
My previous programming knowledge includes:

BASIC
Light C
Even lighter C++ (got as far as Hello world, then the page I was learning from lost me)
Javascript

I believe I have enough space for pretty much any programming language, and my CPU is probably powerful enough to compile any program with ease, so what I'm looking for is what programming language to learn in order to create this program.

Ok, here is the plan. You get a room with an area of infinity, then upset infinity typewriters (you might want to get some each help with that), finally you lure the monkeys that are working on Shakespear with some bananas so you can focus their working potential on your program. Ready, Break!

The best language to code anything is C++, but the easiest since you already know BASIC would prolly be Visual Basic or even Delphi, as theres already have written opensource projects available for ICQ, AIM, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger easily available(In VB atleast)...

I say go with VB or Delphi, Delphi is like Pascal, but with a Win32 UI.

Pascal sucks ass. . . I hate Pascal. DON'T EVER USE PASCAL. I WANT IT TO DIE!!!!

Okay, my rant's over. I really don't like Pascal. . .but that may have something to do with having to learn it in school. . . on a Mac no less.

I have been getting heavily into PERL, and it is awesome. It can do anything, and most of the usual issues have already been coded around. There are TONS of pre-written sub routines freely available on the net. It is a combo of shell scripting and C....

Why not, Scoob? It can easily open ports and listen on each machine, draw windows on whatever OS you are using, etc. etc.

The beauty of it is, all of the code has been pre-written for you, with the exception of you building the main logic loop, which ties all the subs together, telling them what you want them to do. I am constantly writing new code for my company, parsing files, writing file watchers that kick off other PERL scripts to parse out a file when a new one is found and loading the data to a database. I have also written an X-terminal to X-terminal chat proggie with widgets and everything, ala ICQ....
