I've got an Acer Extensa 712TE (laptop) and it keeps hanging when it tries to shut down. It hangs when it says "Windows is shutting down" and just waits there until some good samaritan comes and turns it off.

Anyone know of a fix? It's a PII 300, 32mb ram, running Win98.

I've seen this many time before. Could be a bad windows installation, Win98 doesn't like your laptop, or depending on if you've just played a 3d game, might be an incompatibility with you vid driver... What kind of video chip does it use? NVidia by any chance?

Do you have PCMCIA cards in it?

Take them all out and see if it works properly

I have a similar problem with my comp. When I leave the Asus Smartdoctor program running (it's software that monitor the temp, voltage, and fan speed of my graphics board) when I play Q3 or something, my system will hang on shutdown sometimes for up to a full minute, before it shuts down.

The point to my story is maybe you have something running in the systray, that's interupting the shutdown process. It could be a virus scanner or something. Check it out, manually close all the programs that run in the systray, see what happens.

Do you play games on your laptop? If so, pay attention as to whether or not you were playing an application using OpenGL before the shutdown occurred... May be a problem if you are using reference video drivers.

The shut down problem is infact a know issue with win98. There should be a piece on how to solve it in the microsoft knowledge database. Try these:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/ServiceWare/Windows/Win98/76LMG02EY.ASP

Try running msconfig:

Start -> run -> "msconfig"
Then rummage around the settings, mainly try disabling "fast shutdown".

Most often it is a driver that causes these problems, try booting up in safemode (i.e. minimal ammount of drivers.) and the shutdown will work.

I don't play any games on the laptop except Solitaire (when I'm waiting for the dial up to connect), so the Open GL thing isn't the problem.

I think Lindi's solution will probably be best. I'll check it out. Thx all.
