How is it that almost ALL the players I see in gamespy have sub 50 pings? I am lucky to geta packeted 115 with my DSL connection (640/90).
Are these cable players? I want what they have now dammit!!!
(I am going to check out UT now but I bet I will go back to Quake2 once again)
Refresh Gamespy and and check it out for yourself if you don't believe me!
The other beef I have with Quake3 is those lame bots. Most of the servers I ping in well too have them. Who wants to fight a bot with an obvious timing advantage online. I say including them in the online game was dumb.

I'm on Shaw@home and in the last month my pings have went all to hell. I used to ping 50 - 70 in a shitload of servers, now the only server I can get a sub 100 ping is a shaw server. Also the downtimes with shaw are getting worse and the reliability of the mail connection is usually less than a 50-50 chance it'll be up. I am about to look for an alternative isp.

I think one reason that you see lower pinged players in Q3 is that Q3 was/is way more commericalized that another other Quake game. It was targeted at the public as a big cyberathelete online gaming event, so in turn I think that alot of new people picked up the game. (went out bought a new pc and a really fast connection) That and the increasingly availablity of broadband in most areas can also attribute to the fact of lower pinged players. No doubt either that Q3 is aimed at broadband. Im still waiting for my chance for a good fast connection.

I'm getting broadband next month. I'm moving and one of my future roommates has Cable. Guess that means I need to buy a hub since he doesn't have one, and probably won't buy one.

I know your guys' pain!! I'm finally connected with one of the best connections you can get. I have a 10Mbps connection at the university. UBC has 25Mbps during offpeak hours totally dedicated to the resnet that I'm on. The reason why I only get 10 is because the section of the network I'm on is only a TBase10 network.
I have played on q2 servers with pings of under 30ms, and q3 servers with a ping of 19-22. Those ping times are better than having a server on my machine!!!
Today I hosted a quake 3 server and had like 8 people... most of them lpbs!

I had a good Q3 game last night and I can really see why it is sweet to the LPB. I am going to cancel DSL for that when it comes.

Yes i have cable...and DJ, I would call Shaw and tell them to get their asses to your house and check youline levels...or tell them to install another f*cking node!!! Cause I always ping low in Calgary...always.
My top download speed was at an average of 803k/s on a 92B (downloading QNX btw hehe)file and (i don't know if i believe this or not) but my network monitoring app showed a 6 second spike of 1.2MB/s down.

Snag, that 1.2MB spike is actually correct. Think about it, I'm assuming that you have cable, and that your Cable Modem uses a 10BaseT connection to you're comp.
10Mbps/8(not 10 like lay persons assume)bits per byte = 1.2MB/s.
It makes sense simply because the packets that the comp sends out telling the other end to keep sending data take up bandwidth, between packets the download would logically spike a bit. What if the comp didn't send those packets, say for six seconds. That could get you up to 1.2MB/s and doesn't surprise me.

Well I knew theoretically it was possible with cable, etc...but i just wasn't sure if that would be...plausible

Cy, do you have a rate set in your q3 autoexec? It won't help with pings, but will with pl. If you just set "cable/dsl" as your connection speed in the menu, it defaults at 25,000. I have noticed the game runs much better for me at 10,000. I believe The Killer mentioned I should try 10,000 once a while back and my netgraph is now no longer redder than my eyes, which is a good thing, cause my eyes are usually pretty red.

Cy~ I got DSL about 6 weeks ago and I've been pinging around 50 at the best. I haven't found a server where I can ping sub 50's as of yet I agree with OR on this, check your rate.
If anyone wants to play with me I'm usually at the RA3 server called Recreational Homocide (FYI)
