I have a question guys and gals. I want to get a DVD-Rom, but I don't know what a good one would be. I have my eye on a Pioneer 16x DVD, it's $185 canadian or about $123 US. Is that even a good price? The other question I have is do I need a decoder card no matter what, or would I only need that for watching DVD movies if my comuter absolutely sucked, which it doesn't.

See the problem is that I didn't bother keeping up to date with the technology, now I'm not as informed as I should be.

if yer computer does not suck, you will not need a decoder card.
i found yer dvd for 107 US$ here http://www.gogocity.com//product_details.asp?dept%5Fid =225&pf%5Fid=CO2828DVD024&mscssid=KLCAASD3L1S92JEP00JP42PFC4MT0VL1

and yah, that's a purty good price

sometimes decoder cards are nice though, because its pretty often that they have like tv outs on them. but your vid card mite have one too? i dunno

remember one more thing, whatever software can do, hardware can do better. I would still get a good decoder (unless you get a video card with a built in decoder). When my buddy upgraded his Pentium to an Athlon and his dxr2 was no longer compatible, we saw the difference first hand when he went to softDVD decoding. The movies were enjoyable, but the picture was not as good; sharpness was lacking, the contrast came out layered etc...and keep in mind this was with an Athlon 650....so not a shitty computer. And like I said, whatever software can do, hardware can do better. A good example of this are those old MMX emulators (oh god that was a funny time). Another even is glide wrappers...they work, but not with the same glory. SoftDVD will suffice....but if you want good picture quality (plus AC-3 output) go for a good decoder. (which brings me to another point, softdvd robs ou of sound quality too and might pose another reason to go hardware.

Yes Grumps, my graphics card has TV Out, it's even got Compsite/S-Video Out, and TV/Composite/S-Video In. It's an Asus V6800 Deluxe.

That whole decoder issue bugs me, it's only used for movies, so that means that if a DVD that contains something other than a movie, or a regular CD is being used, the decoder is essentially useless? I don't particularly like the idea of buying hardware that I'll only use once in a while. But you're right Snag, anything software can do, hardware can do better. I remember back to mpeg2 software codecs, those were awfull weren't they. I'm was so glad when it became a standard feature on graphics boards.

Thanks dudes.

You DEFINITELY don't need a decoder card.

The geforce cards from ASUS (ive got one v6600 and a v6800 at werk(both deluxe)) have a dvd decoder BUILT IN to the card, (just run the autorun off of yer driver disk that came with the card to see)

Then, go to asus.com.tw and get the latest beta versions of all stuff about dvd.

Also, check in yer bios if agp aperture size is 64 - if its not the card doesn't buffer the info correctly and gives you a tearing effect - youll be able to tell, trust me!

Hope that crapping on actually helps!!

Pars, I just have one simple question . . . well two, one of them is probably stupid though so bear with me. I'm just trying to get a handle on the situation you have just presented to me.

1, If the v6800 has built in DVD acceleration, how does the DVD-Rom connect to the 'puter? (I know that's the dumb question)

2, Once the dvd is connected, how does the card "know" to decode DVD movie information?

Acid, nothing isused to connect the DVD to the devoder. If you browse around on the discsyou would noticethey are merely files...so it would be like watching an mpgso to speak..i mean, what connectsyour hard drive to your video card :P

Since you have a kick ass video cardthat does have built in decoding the only reason to get a dedicated decoder card would be if you had a killer stereo that supported AC-3 etc. No worriesman, your system will handle DVD beautifully. With a decoder card,it is much like the old 3d cards with a pass through cable since they use overlay, and that was the only cable you had to connect (except of course the audio cables etc...)

Well, in my case (i built my own box from scratch) - and if yer not afraid to do stuff yourself then:

Take the dvd and place it in a free slot (its bout as big as a cdrom(i think) and then take the skinny little audio cable and put it in yer sound card (read snd card book for the right plug'hole)(PS if youve already got a cdrom dont worry bout the sound cable)

Then, get the dvd's ide cable and plug it into a free hole in yer board, or line it with something else, zip drive, other cdrom etc.

Then turn on the pc, make sure bios sez something about a new cdrom or even "pioneer dvd @ 16x" (thatd be cool!)

then windows should detect it, install the drivers off of its cd (to be safe) and then give yer beast a restart.

BUT here is the important bit!!!

In your asus box, you should have a cd with dvd stuff on it - "ASUS DVD" YOU MUST INSTALL THIS STUFF!!

after youve done that, and all went well (i reeeelly hope it did) then you should be able to open the asus dvd stuff and play yer dvd's!!

You asked me to, hahahaha

if you dont want to do it yerself then take it to a comp shop and theyll do it for you.

i hope that all helps man, sorry to be a r33333l bore!!

Snag, I wasn't too clear with my second question, I meant to ask whether the card automatically by-passed the software decoder that's part of the Asus DVD 2000 software program. Looking at the back of my cards box it actually says that it has DVD acceleration.

Parsout, thanks for answering both questions, although what I really meant by "How does the DVD connect?" I thought for a second that you meant to connect it right to the card using the VIP video expansion port, which wouldn't work. Anyway, now that I've got it straight my descision is a little easier to make.

Thanks all
