I feel your pain d00d...

I get something like 8 TV channels, and the olympics are on 4 of them. I haven't got anything against the olympics, but it just isn't my thing and I'd like to watch something else.

Lol you think you've got it bad?
I live in Australia! I hear "Go! Go! Aussie Gold! Gold for us battling Aussies! Go! Go!" from when I wake up till when I go to sleep.

Everything pisses me off about the Olympics. Almost every single product you can imagine is an 'official Olympic product', and if it's not, then it's at least a 'proud supprter'. McDonalds even invented two more mascots to sell with their Happy Meals just so they could make more money. I thought the 'Official Salted Snack' logo on the Pringles jar i keep my coins in was bad enough, but there are worse here.

I don't have cable TV or anything, because I watch about 2 hours of TV a week, but out of the three commercial channels I get, one is 24-Hour Olympics or something.

They even put the Simpsons on instead of Just Shoot Me, and the Simpsons was about the Olympics coming to Springfield. Goddamn.

Sure, athletes are good, but they're sure not heroes I think. They can swim fast or throw something to someone else quickly, or they can run from point A to point B in 'not much time'. They do work hard, and they are an inspiration to a lot of people, but I think calling them heroes is going a bit over the top. I don't mean to trivialize the Olympics, to anyone who takes offence at that by the way.

When It's all over I think everyone'll have some sort of hangover (some literally). They'll wake up the day after the closing ceremony and think "What am I going to talk about today?"

What did you people think of the lighting of the flame? Cathy Freeman definately deserved to do it, but I thought it was a bit of a let down. I was hoping the water flowing down the stairs would be fuel or something, and the flame would light up the stairs and then reach the torch. Looks like I expected too much.

A bit mean, I guess. The athletes are doing well. And from what I heard, the yanks and the Aussies are tied.

What about the poor gymnasts. The poor girls and their stunted growth. And the guys - wtf - I don't think 160+ pounds of weight should go spiing throught the air landing on your ankles.

That whole gymnast thing is fucked up IMO.

Don't feel sorry for the athletes, becuase that is what they want to do. They train on average 5 hours a day, every day, because they want to be the best.
I don't know if it's just becuase I used to be a competitive swimmer up till recently, but I really do get that. Stunted growth? What is that to winning a GOLD MEDAL for your country? Being the source of National pride? Knowing you are the best?
I've trained competitively for 8 years. I started at the tiny age of 7, where I was the worse swimmer in my swim team. By the time I turned 8, I had reached the top ranks, and I stayed there. Together with a relay team we broke 4 school records which still stand unbroken today. At 12, 13, I started breaking individual school records and I swam in the junior nationals. If anyone had told me I could've made the Olympics and someone offered to train me, I'd still be swimming, I'd give up my social life and wake up at 6 in the morning to get into the pool before school, and train after school as well as do my homework.
Unfortunately, since I moved to England my body's just been constantly letting me down and even now when I'm not swimming I'm still constantly tired and catch colds at least every month or so. But if I still had that chance... I'd MAKE my body do it.
The fastest, the strongest, the best. That's what the Olympics is all about. Showing it on TV gives younger aspiring athletes a chance to study the form of the best athletes in the world(whatever you do though, if you're a swimmer, DON'T watch Ian Thorpe when he's doing backstroke), as well as give them a chance to watch their idols in action.
To win Olympic medals is a good source of national pride. We're supposed to be living in a big international world and stuff but there's still patrioism and always will be. People want to see the athletes from their country succeed and be the best, because in some skewed way or another, that means their country is the best. Because their country can produce good athletes. Also, family members and friends want to watch their famous athlete relative in action. I know if I was in the Olympics, I'd like to know that people I love back home or wherever they were would be watching me and cheering me on.

[/bad rant]

I just wanna go to Oz...SERIOUSLY!! I know many people who have gone there (they all go for 3+ months for some reason...dunno if i could do THAT) and everybody loved it....said it was the best time of their lives. I would like to go their for a while..walk the beach, use my "Canadian Accent" to score the babes...but if it is gonna be on a beach i better buff up

As for the Olympics, I like it. Here in Canada they never show any other sports on TV other than The Blue Jays or the 'Leafs. And I fucking hate it! I hate Toronto (I like the Jays though) and i pretty much hate all of canadaeast of Manitoba (they deserve our sympathy hehe). It is anice change to see different sports and different athletes rather than being bombarded with the same bullshit outta Toronto day in and day out.
Watching when Donovan Bailey took gold and then watching Michael Johnson pull up lame (yeah...fucking pussy just wanted to have an excuse for getting his ass kicked...if you look he glances over at Bailey, sees he is winning and then begins a limp...WHATEVER!!) was the greatest feeling of Patriotic Pride. I noticed also that when anybody seems to get anywhere near patriotic as the US, the US kinda gets all pissy thinking they are being ignorant and self-centred blah lah...it is funny

Anyhow, Olympics....YAAAY
Oz....YAAAY
Oz Men...watch your womencause I WILL BE COMING DOWN UNDER (just nobody knows when mwahaha)
And one mre thing....even though our olympic team sucks: YAAAAAY CANADA!!!!

First of all, he doesn't KICK in backstroke, and sometimes he crosses his legs!
Second of all... he swims backstroke kinda like my sister! He sticks his head out of the water as if he was looking forward not towards the roof. However, he's pretty fast at it. He would probably be faster if he did it correctly though!

I've always been a fan of an unorthodox style. Many of my coaches had the dubious pleasure of challenging disqualifications I was given because of my technique. None of the DQs I was given in backstroke stuck.

I never had a problem with unorthodox styles. Then again, I did get a DQ once because I used a suicide turn in an IM going from backstroke to breaststroke. For those of you that don't know what a suicide turn is, it's where you bring your feet right up over your head, like a backwards summersault, when turning in backstroke, rather than rolling over to do a tumble turn. The tumble turn is illegal in the transisition that I was doing, and since I was bored, I did the suicide turn, which is perfectly legal for that, won the race and got DQ'd because the official was an idiot, and didn't realize that I had done nothing wrong. I got a national time in that race too.

What??? You didn't even argue or anything??? I always use that turn for my IM. hurh. that sucks.

Form... it's good. It's the only thing that gives short weak people like me a chance.

Well, it didn't seem like it was that important. Besides, does it reallly matter? don't get me wrong, I LOVED swimming competitively, but to me it didn't matter cause I don't like the IM anyway. I've always prefered the 100m and 200m Breatstroke. I was unstoppable in that event. At least until I blew out my knee in a mountain bike accident.

I'm surprised Peter Whore (the serial pest) hasn't turned up yet. I hope he does though. Whatta champ

Acid-

I was DQ'd for that reason too. My coach would protest and not let up until the DQ was cancelled or it was agreed the race would be redone. Some officials are COMPLETE IDIOTS!

Should we start a therapy group for people that were DQ'd for use of the suicide turn?

MrsCy, see, the difference between your coach and my coach, is that my coach was already disliked by most of the coaching community because he didn't follow all the Canadian coaching guidelines. See, canadian swim coaches have this annoying tendency to try and make ALL canadian swimmers swim the same way. My coach didn't do that, so alot of other coaches didn't like him. If he argued alot with officials he probably wouldn't be coaching anymore.

Maybe we should start a support group.

I don't get it though. Where I used to swim... it was this international community thing and you had to get a qualification to be an official, and you had to learn everything that was allowed, and everything that wasn't. One of the main things was that if you weren't sure, you were to give the swimmer the benefit of the doubt. Didn't you guys have that too?

I've been DQ'd I think two times in all of my swimming career... the worst time was when I was in the freestyle relay and I dived in too early. If I hadn't, we would've won and cracked another record. Of course that was my fault.
The other time it was just that one of the officials said I used a butterfly kick in the breaststroke... like you know when you're doing your arms and your legs are together? I don't conciously remember doing it but...

We have something like that here in Canada, but sometimes the officials forget things, or they over look stuff. They're only human. I've forgiven them their mistakes. I'm not holding a grudge, because I know that I've gotten away with stuff that they haven't seen. I almost always early dived in relays, I had the timing shaved down so close that sometimes I'd leave to block a little early, I NEVER got caught doing that
