[BEGIN RANT] Why do so many windows notepad copy and paste look ma I can turn on a computer that was engineered to be easy learning java in 21 days listening to bad ghetto music want to install linux? What is the linux claim to fame? Running web servers? Nigga please.. Like a web server is a truly demanding and complex piece of software. When linux actually runs the same variety of hardware and software that windows runs while being friendly to the same user base, we'll see how well linux runs. Plus, linux doesn't currently have nearly as many as lame ass programmers producing software for it. Wait till there is something like Visual Basic for linux...yummy. Linux chic. Who would have thought it would be hip to be sooo fn square. [END RANT]

Linux's claim to faim falls under serveral immediatly recognizable catagories1) It's free 2) It's open source, so you can dive in and edit the code and customize it to your likeing, and as such, optimize it to run very well on your computer 3) It's very secure, much, much more then windows. quote:

Umm... I'd like to see your numbers, it has a very large (and ever growing) world wide following of programmers who produce FREE QUALITY software. I think one of the nice things about Linux is that it doesn't have Visual Basic. VB is such crap when it comes to programming. Also, it's supposed to be based upon many of the things that Unix is. It was never ment to be userfriendly like windows in the first place, but it has gotten very much so in recent years. Check out www.helixgnome.com for example. And the Mandrake installer is beautifle, and IMO, better then win9x installer. Keep in mind, Linux was never ment for the average computer user, it was developed and used by people who know that they're doing, and what they want to do.

Scooby,I didn't express this well, my rant came to surface because I read for the 50th time today that Linux is an alternative OS to Windows. Which, as you point out, Linux is no alternative to Windows. Only Apple is comparable. The fact that so many people expect to fire up Linux and get the same Windows experience is in my opinion, naive. Linux is more secure? Like any OS or piece of software for that matter, security is a configuration away. Security is also a relative term, for that matter. Just ask naive yahoos with cable modems installing Linux for the first time using the root account as there main account how secure linux is..
