So, I have a major problem. I did set up the Quake3 Arena and I installed the newest update (1.32). The framerate is about one per second all the time from the beginning when I start the game. Yes, this means also the intros in the beginning. The slow fps should not be because of my computer:
800MHz athlon
256MB 133MHz SDRAM
GeForce 2 GTS 64MB
80Gt HDD

I have installed the newest detonators (52.16) and nothing seems to help. The fps is still very slow. I would really need helpo.

Go to your Device Manager and make sure the Primary and Secondary IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers are set to DMA. It will be under the advanced settings tab of each one.
You should also run a timedemo to get an accurate reading of your fps. You can download one here. Download and put in the Quake III Arena/baseq3/Demos folder. If you don't already have a demos folder there, make one. Then open the game and pull down the console and type in
/timedemo 1
hit enter
/demo time
hit enter. When the demos done, pull the console back down to see what your fps is.
I don't remember what I got in that demo with my 866 and GF2 but it should be somewheres in the range of 100 - 150 I think.
It probably wouldn't hurt to turn off some of the unneeded Services in XP either. Just search Google for XP Services tweaks and you should find some guides.
