Is there a patch or something to cure my mouse problem? Every so often, my mouse flips out and looses the tracking or something, and I end up looking straight down, and then getting blasted away LOL

I am using Logitech optical.

Also, what are some good variations on using the keyboard/mouse as controls? I need a better setup for jumping.

First make sure that the area on the bottom of the mouse around the eye is clean. I've had the same thing happen and it ended up being dust in the cavity that contains the eye. Other than that all you can do is make sure you have the latest mouse drivers but if it's a random occurence I doubt that's the problem.
As far as keyboard/mouse cfgs, it's what you get comfortable with. I only use the right side of the keyboard. ie; cursor keys for movement and num pad keys for binds while using the right mouse button for jumping and the rest of they buttons for various weapon binds.
Other people love the left side of the keyboard using a lot of the default binds and going from there.
