I have Quake 3 Gold and it runs great under OS 9 but I want it to run natively in OS X. I downloaded the patch (MacQuake3-1.30-OSX-b1) and it installed without a problem.
When I run the OS X executable, I get a dialog box saying:

"You need to select the installation directory for Quake3 (not any directory inside of it -- the installation directory itself)."

No matter which directory I select, it just brings me back the same dialog box.

Can anyone help me?

Mmmmm that's a good one.... unfortunately I am no expert on a Quake 3 Mac OS X installation. Have you read the read_me file with it? Perhaps you can find some usefull informations on it. or maybe another lost soul on this forum who would be using Mac OS C could help you.

Believe me, I'm a follower of the religion of RTFM!
Unfortunately, the docs with this are scant to non-existent and id's site is pretty useless too.

hmmm... a friend installed it pretty easily.

Where did you install the MacQuake3-1.30-OSX-b1 file to? Which files got extracted from the patch?

That might provide us PC users with some insight.

I really can't help you too much since I don't know how Quake 3 work on a Mac. Sorry about that. I'll ask my friend if he wants to take a look. He knows mac very well and he play Quake 3. That might help.. :P

Mmmm, here are my thoughts on the subject. I personally ran the installer and am using Q3A on MacOS X, without any problems.

I'm sure you already took the good steps but I want to be totally sure.

1) Installed Q3A CD, from 9 or Classic
2) Got the X GamePointRelease. The file is called MacALL-Q3A-1-31-BETA4.sit on ID's FTP, and decompresses to a folder named the same thing but with "folder" at the end.
2b) The directory contains two "Quake3" files, one is a Classic App and one X App. It also contains a "basesq3" directory and a "missionpack" directory.
3) Copy the Quake3 application(s) from the patch to your previously installed Q3 folder.
4) Open the patch basesq3 folder and copy the file "pak7.pk3" to your previously installed Q3 basesq3 folder.
5) If you have Team Arena installed, open the patch missionpack folder and copy the pak2.pk3 file to your previously installed Q3 missionpack folder.
6) If you want, you can remove the old "MacQuake" classic application.
7) Run the Q3 X application (to know which is which, do a "Show info". It will show one as an "Application" and the other as a "Classic Application". The X one is of course the "Application".
8) Enjoy the newfound speed. It's really really faster than 9!

If that'S not it, well, I'll try to help more.

Have a nice day
Mike
