This is a two parter problem so please bear with me.

I guess firstly I should say that I am running the retail Quake 3 with no patches on Win2000 Athlon system with Hercules prophet II GTS 32Mb and Hitachi CM772 monitor.

Ok Q1 - I run my resolution at 1280 x 1024 at 85Hz in windows but when i play Quake or any game for that matter the monitor only runs at 60Hz and I cant adjust it with any of the monitor menus.

the second Q is when I am running Q3 at resolution of 1280 x 1024 I lose about 3cm of screen on the right eg cant see the right arrow to change tier. I have tried to use horizontal shift and shrinking but all that does it leave black screen.

I am hoping these are just basic problems and i am not being too stupid asking the q, but i am a newbie so please be nice

Thanks

This is a problem with windows 2000. It wont go about a refresh rate of 60Hz by default. You need a program called NV Refresh Rate fix. I think you can get it at http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/
It only works for nVidia cards as far as I know, but it should help.

Set the resolution to 1024x768 and it will probably center the screen.

I don't know about that 1024x768 thing because I have my computer set to that and the refresh rate still changes. I am running 2000 also (can't stand the DOS operating systems no more) and everything is fine when not playing the game but once I load the game, the screen size is smaller and to the left of the viewable area.
