me and my friend have DSL and cable modems... when we play together whoever is not the creator of the game has horrible lag but the person who made the game has no lag.... we both have our network setting on lan/cable/dsl and were getting so annoyed we wont play quake anymore .. i need some help any suggestions

Try to find a server online you both ping the same to. DSL and Cable isn't that great for running a server usually. Better than a 56.6 but not like a server with a T3 connection. Or, one of you start a dedicated server and then open Q3 again and connect to it through the ip like the other guy will. Your pings may be more equal then.

The problem is the cable to dsl conversion when you connect to each other. Cable has a hard time communicating to DSL and since cable suffers a lot more packet loss then DSL you get lag. If you played like 8 in the morning or whatever isn't a peak time for the cable modem user.. your lag will be fine. If you are on at say... after supper when it is usually busy they the lag would be horrible. My friend has cable and it sucks for quake3 online, even when we just connect to each other. He has to log on early morning to get a good ping to me or ne where else. Ne other time the lag meter is full of red spikes and the game is unplayable.. this is why i switched to DSL> The PL on cable was horrible.

I don't find cable that bad when playing on a few choice servers any time of the day/nite. I can play from the west coast in Canada to a couple servers in New York and ping just a tad over 100 and it plays smooth. Our clan server is in Minnesota and I play fine on it too. I ping around 50 or less to a few servers in Washington too. I just have trouble running a server after 3 or more people connect. That's when it lags down.

Not all cable is bad. I was just relating to what the first poster said. Plus when you play online the servers more then like are T1 and Up. Just for the books i hosted server with about 8 people and it never affected the pings.

I don't think the problem is the connection.

Westy, when you're running a server, do you set up your server, then run a SECOND instance of Q3 and then join the server on your machine, or do you just create a server and play from within the server, cause that causes TONS of lag for anyone trying to join. Playing directly in the server I mean.

well...
If your cable is AT&T @home, it just sucks...
cause AT&T is a bunch of whores

I'm getting free TV and internet cable from them *and HBO and Showtime* Because they never cut the shit off...
they gonna drive themselves to bankrupcy

At least, they would if they didn't have a monopoly in some places, cause they own all the lines where I live.
But, I am gettin it for free
