I'm on a cable connection that I share with another computer in my home. When I refresh the q3 servers I get nice pings ranging from 30-90, after joining any server my ping is in the 200-500 range and my packet loss graph is just awful. In other games my ping is just fine I don't understand why I'm getting such a bad connect on a cable modem. What should my rate be set at? cable/lan/dsl default? Any info/help would be appreciated

Well you should set it to "cable", you can the check the value by typing /rate in the console. See if increasin / decreasong the value, in steps of 100, will improve your connection.

Use the lagometer to diagnose your connection. Green = good, Yellow/Red = bad.

You might wan't to check the upset chaps site out, a nice collection of connection tweaks is available there. (Look under the public library.)

Hope that helps.

Also, how are you sharing your connection? You could be introducing interference and subsequent packet loss. I also would not read too much into those pings on the search....they are just meant as a baseline. Try pinging the server from a shell and see what happens over several pings. You most likely see that that server was not so shit hot to begin with. Another thing is, since you are sharing, how long is your cat5 cable? Cause if you have it too long that will cause packet loss. Also, where do you have your cables running? Are they running along any electrical cables?? Cause the best thing is to keep data cables as far away from electrical cables as possible. If they must cross, make sure it is at 90 degrees to minimize the exposure to the emf.

Another thing people have to realize is that pinging is one thing...sustaining a data rate is another.

Cable=Sux. If you are on RR or something like that the Packet loss is horrible. I had Cable for like 2 months and it sucked so bad they gave me 2 months free. Get DSL or something. Cable isn't worth it. Sorry man but someone had to say it.

dial up sux too...and depending where you are, dsl sux worse yet my point is cable is not available to all people, no cable provider is the same and no cable node is the same. Cable for me rocks. I routinely download from Tucows at over 600k/s. I ALWAYS max out my upload speed at 50k/s...when my max is 50k/s and I have uploaded 17.3GB to my buddy's ftp server 340km away at an average of 43k/s, I would say I got a good connection. So...does cable suck? Maybe yours did. But for me...when I can download like that and ping to on average 15 Q3 servers with sub 50 pings, I ain't gonna bitch...not for $40 a month (actually $25 but hey...not everyone has a hub and a roommate hehe)
