I just got an Athalon 900, on an ABIT KT7-Raid, with 256 megs of micron Cas-2 (pc133) ram.

For one reason or another I can't run ANY games running on the quake engine (QuakeIII Arena, Q3F demo, Alice... ANYTHING...) Any sugestions...

The symptoms are... I start the games... They freeze at the menu. That's it...

Thank you.

Chad

Display adapter? Soundcard? DirectX version? Latest drivers?

Talk about answering with a question...

WinME, Prophet II gts 64ddr, SB Live, Just flashed the prophet's bios to see if that was it, have tried the latest detonators, AND Hercules' drivers, had DX7, tried DX8, that made my computer suck more, so I gt a utility to uninstall them... so now I have DX7 again...

Hmmm. correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you also might wan't to check if there are any bios updates for your mobo.

My mobo was just released recently, but there is one update... BUT... it's a beta, and flashing my bios with a beta just doesn't sound like a good idea...

Hercules has a forum also and the tech section is moderated by Herc tech so he answers a lot of the questions there. http://us.hercules.com
You also might see someone else with the same problem and they may have already posted a fix. I would have saved the Prophet bios flash as a last resort because as far as I know, you can never flash the original bios back if you needed to. The bios for the KT7 Raid I saw doesn't say anything about being a beta and was released on 09/05/2000. I would see what kind of updates are available for the VIA. Might also try disabling AGPx4. Set it to 1 and see if that works.

One thing I noticed is that on the 3 machines we had running ME the Detonator drivers were the trouble makers ...

This is also on 2 different systems and three different nVidia chips (TNT, TNT 2 and GeForce)

Some setups do not work too well with certain settings like Fast writes, AGP 4x, or 1 wait state AGP read/write.

(You may want to print this out or write it down)

Reboot your computer, and just as soon as you see the initial screen (after the screen showing 3d prophet info), hold in Delete. Hold it in until a blue screen pops up. This is your bios.

Before you change any settings, write down the names of them and the setting they were on before you changed them. That way if you screw something up, you can do 2 things. 1) Not bitch at me and 2) Change the setting back to the original one

Go to Advanced Chipset controls and scroll down until you see Fast Writes. If it is not disabled already, do this.

Find AGP 4x mode. Disable this as well.

Down at the bottom of the page should be two items with "AGP 1 WS" in them. Set these to disabled if they're not already as well.

There is an AGP Aperture setting as well (I think it is also in Advanced chipset). Play around with this setting, because it can produce the result that fixes your problem.

Hopefully this will work.

If the above settings were all already disabled and none of the AGP aperture settings fixed it, then you could try resetting the bios to fail-safe defaults. If that doesn't work, try optimal defaults.

Usually problems like these involve the bios, and it is easy to send it down FUBAR street. If you manage to get your computer to stop even powering on or booting, calm down. You CAN reset your bios.

Unplug your computer, and consult the manual for the motherboard. It has all the instructions you need to follow to be able to reset your bios.

Hopefully you will not need to go that far though.
