I am running:
Athlon 700
Asus K7A motherboard
128 megs PC100
IBM 22gb hd
kenwood 52x cdrom
Diamond Viper V770 regular (TNT2)
SB Live!
3com net card

Quake3 likes to hang at random when I'm playing on our lan. There are no signs of the hang coming, it just freezes my computer.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Does your vid card have a fan? If not, GET ONE!

Do you have anything running in the background such as an anti-virus program? If you do delete it from your startup folder or press ctrl+alt+delete and end task on everything except Explorer and systray. I had the same problem aftre getting Norton Antivirus

I rigged up a fan as soon as I put that video card in my system.

As far as AV programs are concerned, I did not start running NAV until just recently and Q3A has been crashing all along. I don't run much other stuff in the bg.

I'ev noticed that old 486 CPU fans are great for vidcards. They are pretty quite, very durable, small enough to fit perfectly AND easy enough to plugg in.

ZyTeK ~ dolent is running Win200Pro, so ending proceses is a little different than it is in win9x.

Dolent ~ I've noticed that the drivers affect my Q3 performance pretty much, some are more stable than others. The latest detonators were unstable, but the 5.33 version was quite stable for me.

That's exactly what I used, a 486 cooler fan.
Those things work perfectly.

But nevertheless, Q3A is still freezing on me! Doesn't anyone else have this problem?

So how about the drivers then? I guess your running DX7 but how about the drivers then? Have you tried the latest detonators, or your card manufacturers latest?

Have you tried disabling unnecesary services, like printer spooling and such. Has anything else changed in your system lately, any new software...(?)

Okay, im pretty sure that this will work...

My bro has had these problems (more or less same pc but with lesser processor and a voodoo3) but when he changed his pc so that the Network card's ip was set, it started crashing, so if your network ip is set, unset it on all the pc's and try it.

Hope that helps, keep us posted

I have the newest detonator drivers, still no luck. 3com is not my problem because I've never had a problem with their products before.

I have to have my IP set because it is static and the computer has to know it. Otherwise I only have basic things running in the background.

So hey I am having the exact problem...I play for like 15 minutes and then it just locks up on me...what the hell is the problem...I am running dual celeron 500's with 256 megs of ram on win2k and a geforce 2 DDR pure...it only started happening when I put on the new point release....what is the problem with it? Is there a patch or do I have to reinstall it again? I know it is not my computer itself cause it worked until the new point release was installed...let me know if you have any ideas anyone..

skam, I wish I had an answer to this problem. My wife's machine is a dual Celly 466 w/256 ram and she had the same problem with a S540 Stealth card. I put a V3/2000 in and it hasn't locked up since. I can't believe your Geforce would be causing a problem though unless it's really getting hot. Still sounds like a heat problem to me.

Heat may be an issue....but also, depending on how old you mobo is, earlier Athlon mobo's were underpowering the AGP slot causing prolems such as this as well.

Power stability may be an issue...running at 450, with 3 cdroms, 1 ide hd, 2 auxillary fans, my scsi controller and hd, my tape drive, live!, voodoo 2, TNT, my nic, dxr2 card and my trusty ol' modem, my system used to crash with the 250W p/s...upgraded that and those problems went away.

if it happens generally at the same time all the time once you play the game though, most certainly it will be heat related.

If you want to uninstall the patch - delete pak4.pk3 from the q3 folder - then reinstall the 1.17 patch again.

However,

you don't have heat prob's, your power supply is the problem (read the back of yer video card box to see what i mean) id recommend an 320 watt supply - my work pc has a 350 but thats cos of my DV card.

It is Win2k that's causing the problem.
I downgraded to Win98se and q3 runs with absolutely NO problems at all.

It is not a heat related problem, it is just a win2k problem.

Maybe win2k just doesn't like your combo. I have Q3 running fine with win2k on three machines. No lock-ups and no crashes.
Asus P2B w/PII 350
Abit BP6 w/dual 466's
Asus CUBX w/PIII 650@806
The 350 has a S540 video card with 128 mb ram and the other two have V3/2000's with 256 mb ram.
The dual 466's used to lock up in win98 with the S540 card and I swapped with the V3 from the 350 and cured that.

Hardware incompatibilities are quite difficult to figure out, especialy if you don't have more than one box to play around with!
