I love to play quake 2, and I would like to test my abilities against others, but frankly, I don't even know where to start. I don't know much about mods, or what files are needed, or anything pertaining to quake other than what I shoot and what buttons I use to move around. I think I got the right patch that updated my quake to everyone else's, but I still can't find a way to join any games at all. If anyone has the patience to help, please do, because I would like to know a bit more about what does what and so on and so forth... Thanks to all to help... _james

Hi James. Welcome to the board. I didn't get into Quake until Q3 but there's lots of other folks here that will give you a hand.

Well first get the 3.20 patch, which should be pretty easy to find.
http://www.planetquake.com/quake2/files.shtml

Then get the all seeing eye, an excellent server browser.

You will find a few game types, of which you can start playing atleast "normal" quake 2 DM and lithium (great mod btw) which do not require any client side modifications.

Make sure to set your connection type and and configure quake to auto download maps.

Have fun.
