okay, here's something weird:he reinstalled his video drivers, and his audio drivers.. then ran quake this morning and it worked fine (singleplayer). Previously he couldnt play singleplayer either.
today when he tried to play single player, it worked fine. then later today when he got home from school, he msged me and told me it didnt work again. he would connect to a server, and as soon as someone would show up in his screen (or he tries to shoot them). err..here's his exact words:
branflakes:
"yeah it was working perfectly in single player this morning.
Okay. When I start up the game, everything is normal. It doesn't ask for cd key and i can go around the options just fine. When I play a single player game, the game works fine for a couple minutes, then the game freezes up, sound loops, and i can't move the mouse or anythign. It's not just quake that crashes, it takes my whole system with it. When I play multiplayer game, it constantly tells me that my connection is being interrupted. Like one step, lag, one step, lag. Before today, it used to just crash once i got into a internet game but now it just likes to lag like hell. I have the latest drivers for sound card and video card and i have the lastest version of direct x."
By the way he has a D-Link DFE-538TX Ethernet card. Thought it was his sound card drivers..but i donnno.. (he has a Soundblaster Live! 5.1)
here is what he did:
"okay first when it crashed, i tried to install the latest video card driver. I didn't uninstall my old one, i just updated it. When that didn't work, i tried to get the latest driver for video card and driver. that didn't work either. Then i realized that there was a note about the sound card driver. I had to have norton antivirus off before i installed the driver or it wouldn't work. So i stopped norton, installed both drivers and went to sleep. The next morning, i started up my system and quake worked perfectly on single player. i didn't try multiplayer. when i got home afterschool it started to have the same symptoms as it had the night before... random crashing after 1 minute of play."
Starcraft worked fine for him, but Diablo2 also doesnt work. same thing happens, freeze and sound loop.
Any thoughts? or fixes?
