Wassup. My friend just got a new computer (i actually configured it for him...) and his quake keeps on crashing. But the thing is, it only crashes when he plays online. He did an offline test and it worked just fine.

What happens is this: he plays for a minute (maybe less) and it just freezes. he cant check the log, he just restarts. what's wrong?

again--that's only online.

here are his specs:

AMD Athlon 1.4ghz 266fsb
EPoX 8K7A DDR Motherboard
Micron 512mb DDR SDRAM (pc2100)
IBM Deskstar 60gxp 60gig hdd
Leadtek Winfast GeForce2 PRO 64mb

and its ALWAYS crashing when he plays online...
can anyone help?

Is it crashing or freezing? If it's freezing, all I can suggest is try different detonators. If that doesn't help, it's probably heat related unless you have an irq conflict between the nic and the vid card. Also, how big of a power supply does he have? Running Win98?

okay, here's something weird:

he reinstalled his video drivers, and his audio drivers.. then ran quake this morning and it worked fine (singleplayer). Previously he couldnt play singleplayer either.

today when he tried to play single player, it worked fine. then later today when he got home from school, he msged me and told me it didnt work again. he would connect to a server, and as soon as someone would show up in his screen (or he tries to shoot them). err..here's his exact words:

branflakes:

"yeah it was working perfectly in single player this morning.

Okay. When I start up the game, everything is normal. It doesn't ask for cd key and i can go around the options just fine. When I play a single player game, the game works fine for a couple minutes, then the game freezes up, sound loops, and i can't move the mouse or anythign. It's not just quake that crashes, it takes my whole system with it. When I play multiplayer game, it constantly tells me that my connection is being interrupted. Like one step, lag, one step, lag. Before today, it used to just crash once i got into a internet game but now it just likes to lag like hell. I have the latest drivers for sound card and video card and i have the lastest version of direct x."

By the way he has a D-Link DFE-538TX Ethernet card. Thought it was his sound card drivers..but i donnno.. (he has a Soundblaster Live! 5.1)

here is what he did:

"okay first when it crashed, i tried to install the latest video card driver. I didn't uninstall my old one, i just updated it. When that didn't work, i tried to get the latest driver for video card and driver. that didn't work either. Then i realized that there was a note about the sound card driver. I had to have norton antivirus off before i installed the driver or it wouldn't work. So i stopped norton, installed both drivers and went to sleep. The next morning, i started up my system and quake worked perfectly on single player. i didn't try multiplayer. when i got home afterschool it started to have the same symptoms as it had the night before... random crashing after 1 minute of play."

Starcraft worked fine for him, but Diablo2 also doesnt work. same thing happens, freeze and sound loop.

Any thoughts? or fixes?

Just for the helluvait I would try un-installing and taking the soundcard totally out of the system and try playing. Then if that fixes it he has it nailed down. Creative Labs cards will cause some wierd things to happen sometimes. As far as the nic goes, I've used the same D-Link with Win2k and had no troubles.
Crap like this can be hard to figure out sometimes. If it works fine in the morning but not the afternoon it could be heat related. Has he tried running with the case off and maybe a fan blowing in? I don't know, I have a bud that has the same problem. He's going to try a new power supply next.
